I have a 2001 Sable with 83,000 miles on it and I keep getting error code P1744. Just wondering how this should be fixed as one dealer says to replace the torque converter and another says the whole tranmission needs to be replaced. I found that the code is for the torque converter clutch system stuck in off position. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

I have a similar code P1742 "stuck on". Have you had any success finding a cure? We put a used transmission in and still have this problem. Usually manifests by slamming 2nd gear hard.

Had no luck trying to save the transmission at all. I'm going to replace the transmission with a used one also in the hopes it will fix it for the time being. This code started about a year ago so had the fluids changed and it seemed to help for some time. But the code did come back and I had several lights come on this time so I took it to the dealer and they told me the transmission is gone. I kind of figured that since the down and up shift was very hard. Be nice if these cars would come with stronger transmissions. I just can't believe that at 83,000 on an 01 the transmission is dead.

Well instead of getting a used transmission I had it rebuilt. Well the shop said I was lucky the car was still moving with all the damage that was done. After getting the car back I went on a trip and at the 200 mile mark the transaxle light came on then about 50 miles later the transmission light came back on. Took it back to the transmission shop and they found that all three of the solenoids had gone out. They replaced them for free since it was within the warranty. Get it back from that and go on another trip and 250 miles later all the lights came on again. Take it back and all three solenoids had gone out again. Well now it is currently at the shop. The thought was that the resistance was off but turned out to be okay. So they looked into the wiring from the ecm to the transmission. Not sure if that was replaced or not since I don't have it back yet. Apparently that didn't fix it because now the computer is the suspect in blowing the solenoids. I will keep this updated since the guy at the transmission shop said this is a common problem with the newer sables and that ford is also having problems with fixing them.

I have just purchased a 1997 Mercury Sable GS Wagon. I am going to take it in for servicing on this P7144 issue. I hope he can rebuild instead of replace transmission.
