2000 Chevrolet Impala 4dr FWD
3.4 Liter V-6
VIN: 2G1WF52E2Y9371105
I bought the car on 8/7/2003 with 41,674 miles.
When I bought it, dealership agrees to put new front pads and rotors on it because they where warped.
This was done at Great Lakes Ford in Ludington.
8/12/04 42,000 miles
Took car back to the ford garage to have them recheck to front brakes. They said that they replaced the rotors in which they didn't, they simply resurfaced them. Have problem fixed, no problems.
9/15/04
Front End Alignment done at Master Muffler and Brakes in Ludington for a pull, vibration in the front end. 43.00.
9/15/03 45,103 Miles
Wal-Mart oil change-Everything checked out fine.
11/17/03 50,164 miles
Took my car in to Great Lakes Ford in Ludington. I complained of a clunking in the front end, over bumps, acceleration, and turning. They test drove it and verified problem. Sold me shaft needed to be lubed. I told them it was already lubed once and I wasn't going to pay over a hundred dollars to have them lube it again, only to have it fail again down the road. Also complained about a constant vibration/shimmy in the front, they said they didn't notice it. A few months prior I have it aligned and the guy there said that he noticed it. I also complained that the fuel pressure regulator was leaking and they replaced it after I encountered a small fire which extinguish rather quickly. Almost like a quick flash, sustained 1st degree burns from the flare up. Also complained about the blower motor relay, only worked on high. Replaced blower motor resistor. 134.09
12/08/03 52,906 miles
Wal-Mart Oil change, tire balance and rotate. Everything checked out fine.
1/02/2004 55,306
Bought front and rear brakes. Replaced rotors because they where warped. Did this myself since its a common thing for a car owner to do. Rotors warped prematurely. 120.00
1/06/04 56156 miles
Wal-Mart Oil change. Everything checked out fine.
1/15/04 56,811 miles
Took car to Wal-Mart to have the tires balanced and rotated again because of the shimmy in the front end. Didn't change anything. Problem still there.
1/20/04 57,201 miles
Driving down the road coming to an intersection, light turned red and started to apply brakes, I heard a loud clunk type sound in the engine compartment and the pedal went right to the floor, NO BRAKES!!!! I started to apply emergency brake and at the same time put the car in neutral and went through the intersection at about 40 mph. Thank god I didn't get hit!!!! or killed.
Luckily the ford dealership was only a few miles away so I drove down back roads to the dealership. They then replaced the master cylinder. At this point I was starting to get worried about the car because I have only had the car about 4-5 months and already had these problems.
2/4/04 unknown miles(Wal-Mart was slacking :))
I have a tired balance and rotate done again, the shimmy was still there. Still didn't fix the problem.
2/4/04 58,469
Took car to Midas and had a transmission flush done. I was told that they replace the filter at 90.000 miles. I had this done hoping it would solve the weird shifting and undesired effects from the transmission, and also because it was required at part of the maintenance schedule. $87.00
2/17/04 59,629
Another wonderful Wal-Mart Oil change. No noted problem.
4/28/04
Took car to Marvels. I kept taking it to the ford garage because they told me the warranty was only good if I went to them to have the work done. A few times they had to take it to a Chevy dealership to have it looked at because they didn't know or they couldn't do the work. I called the warranty company and complained about why they won't pay for the intermitted steering shaft, they told me about some type of a TSB out for it. They then told me that I could take my car anywhere that would accept MasterCard. So after that i called every few days and complained about it. I didn't want to have to pay for a lube job because it was done by a friend who works for a dealership. I bought the lube kit but I don't remember how much i paid for it.
4/28/04 66,008 miles
I took the car to Marvels Chevrolet in Reed City, MI to see if they could fix problems. I took it in with a transmission concern, the erratic undesired operation, shimmy in the steering, and the car was all over the road at highway speeds. I think this is when they replaced the pressure solenoid and the valves in the transmission and FINALLY replaced the intermitted steering shaft. After loosing my car for another day, I got the car back and noticed no change in the transmission. Also, after they replaced the intermitted steering shaft, i notice ALOT of play in the steering, I took it back, complained about how the transmission performance hasn't improved, they then told me that what it was doing was normal and that it wouldn't effect the "longevity" of the transmission. They also stated that the play in the steering was normal. About a week later I again took the car back and complained about the play in the steering, they insisted that it was normal, i told them it didn't do that before, so a lot of complaining to them, it took them 10 minutes to correct the problem with the play in the steering.
5/13/04 67,208 miles
I took the car in and had the A/C checked. I has the lines checked because the A/C wasn't getting cold. They checked it and said it was fine. I then took it to a friend who is a HVAC technician and he discharged the system and recharged it. Marvels told me that with the new A/C systems. Whatever the temperature is outside, the car will only make it 20 degrees colder inside. I don't know if this is true but i didn't buy it. 35.00
06/01/04 68,209
Was coming home one day, went in the house for five minutes, came back out to start my car, it wouldn't start. I did EVERYTHING I could think of and nothing. I then had it towed to Marvels. They said the battery had a dead cell in it. They quoted me some 70 bucks for a new one, went to Wal-Mart and bought one recommended for the car for a little over $40. They said some wire somewhere broke and they repaired it. 22.50
6/05/04 68,554
The car has been performing very poorly and started to guzzle gas. I pulled the spark plugs and put in new ones. Also replaced the wires. Oh, I also put in a new fuel filter because the guy at the parts store recommended it, at this point, I’m open to anything. After I did all this, and 60 dollars later, a bit of improvement in gas mileage and engine idling. Owners manual said that the plugs shouldn't have to be replaced until 100,000.
THIS IS STUFF I KNOW WAS DONE, BUT I DON'T REALLY REMEMBER BECAUSE OF SO MUCH WORK DONE TO IT AND DIDN'T HAVE A RECIEPT FROM DEALERSHIP.
I don't remember when this happened but it was around this point in time. After the car was at normal operating temperature. I would shut it off and walk away and I could notice the smell of antifreeze. I check all the hoses and the radiator and I couldn't find anything. At the same time, i took it in because there was a loud clanking noise in the front end when i went over bumps. They looked at it and wanted to replace the caliper. On that trip, i remembered the antifreeze smell and told them about it. I also stated that there was a loss of power in it. They looked at it and said I needed an intake manifold gasket. So again, I lost my car for a day and replaced it, just to avoid problems, i have them put a new PVC valve, a thermostat, and a coolant flush. So they replaced all the above and I believed i paid around 200 bucks on my half.
I had problems with the blinkers in it (which got me a ticket). Sometimes they would work, and sometimes not. I took it to Marvels and they replaced the hazard switch in it. 78 bucks.
Now, when I’m driving on the expressway at about 70mph. At that point if i want to increase speed, the only way to do it is to put it into passing gear. ANY type of an incline requires passing gear to get over it, yes, some hills do require it, but not all of them.
Most of my tyranny complaints consist of, when i put the car in reverse, it hesitates, RPM's go up, and nothing, car won't move, if i wait five-seven seconds, it will jump into gear, same thing going forward. When i try to merge into fast moving traffic, I can push the pedal to get a little lurch and then nothing(this poses as a huge safety issue, could cause an accident.) Then about 5-7 seconds later it will go and it will be fine. I'm so tired of how many times i have complained about the transmission and get nothing to fix it other then an excuse.
I also notice that after the car is warm, if i where to shut it off, then try to start it, it takes anywhere from 5-10 seconds to start it. I tried plug wires again, nothing, changed the plugs again, nothing changes the performance.
Now, the cooling problem. I noticed that if the car is sitting idling, with no heat or a/c running. it will from a little under 200 to 230-240. If i turn the heat on, it will go down to about 220, if the a/c is on, it will go down to the temp as if it was running down the road. The cooling fans kick on for like 10 seconds and then shut-off. It doesn't overheat, I’m just concerned about it because 250-260 is in the red and considered overheating. It's done this since i have owned it. I have looked at impalas that my friends own and it doesn't budge. I'm just concerned because i don't want to damage the motor. Why can't it maintain the same or close to the same temp as when it's going down the road?
Now there is a clunking type sound, feels and sounds like either some front end parts are going out, or the intermitted steering shaft is going out AGAIN!!! I attempted to get this checked out at Marvels, they told me nothing was wrong, i also complained about the transmission, which they stated nothing wrong with it either. The transmission now, shifts hard, has a nasty up shift, and does what ever it wants. It seems to me Marvels can't fix anything so I'm taking it elsewhere to get work done.
79,000miles- Took the car in to have to front clunking checked again, the rear struts and the catalytic converter check. They told me nothing is wrong with any of my complaints. I took to marvels to see what they say before I take it to another place that I have found and has agreed to work on it.
80,100miles- Took the car to Reed City GMC about four miles from marvels. They took the car for the day to get a good idea of all the problems I have previously had and give the car a good look through. Turns out the lower controls arms on both front wheels, the rack and pinion needs replaced, and both rear struts need replaced. Took a day and a half to replace it and about 2,000 dollars later I got the car back. After getting it back runs better then it has in long time. I have complained about the converter before, everyone says there is nothing wrong with it. Reed City GMC said that it needs replaced badly. I called chevy they said that it now is not covered under warranty and to seem to think that the car hasn’t been a financial burden to me. Then turns around and says, that due to all the problems I have had they agreed to give me a 1,000 incentive for a new car in the future. I told them to forget it and that I wasn’t going to buy another GM vehicle. This point, I don’t really care what happens to it. I’m about ready to get rid of the car, and cut my losses.
All in all, I'm EXTREMELY disappointed in this car. I have put a whole hell of a lot of time and days without a car and a considerable amount of money into it to keep it operational and I can't keep ahead like I would like. I now have to put new brakes on it again, and most of the miles are highway miles!
There are a few things I’m sure I have done that aren't included in this report. I put the oil changes in it just as a consistency to how often I attend to my car to make sure that everything is up and operational.
*If there is anything you guys can do to help me out I would greatly appreciate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm tired of it, I’m buried in it and I want something I can depend on. This is the first GM car I have had problems with and probably the last one I will own for awhile.
Thanks,
Mike

Sounds like this one has hit all of the issues. The temp swings are from DexCool gel in the radiator and thermostat housing has air in it(they must be bled). The intake gasket is a known issue. The Master Cylinder thing is scary. I think this car has been in an accident. Good Luck with your new Toyota LOL.

wow don't know whose problem is worse yours or mine. here's just a few of the many problems i've had.
2001 impala 3.4 liter
bought it brandnew with 7 mi. on odometer at steakley cheverolet,
got an extended warranty; don't know why something just told me to. glad I did.
1st= soon as i got it i noticed something funny about transmission. it would hesitate. fastfoward to 59,000mi just 1,000 miles before my 60,000 mile extended warranty was up. transmission went out totally in all gears forward and reverse. fun sounding right. even though I had warranty f***ing chevy dealear still made me pay 700$.
2nd= ofcoarse i had to have new rotors and pads around 29,000 mi.
3rd= the driver side switch that rolls up all windows went out at about 32,000 mi. paid 50$ ofcoarse.
4th= stopped at a light car died no electrical power whatso ever.about 35,000 mi. dealer said wire was loose on maf sensor.
5th= pulling into my garage it stopped completely no electrical power. at 37,500. dealer said it was because I had an alarm on it. yea right! got my car back and ofcoarse my alarm didn't work. had to go have it reconected.
there's more stuff that went wrong with it i've just been trying to forget it.
and ofcoarse my intermediate steering shaft needs to be oiled.
I think my rubber bushings are going out in the front because after they replaced my tranny its been making noises ever since.(when i slow down or accelerate). my interior lights flicker
lets not forget that ofcoarse i smell radiator fluid like EVERYONE ELSE.
my car has now about 99,000mi. lets just say i'm getting ready for the engine to go out. hell everything else has gone out. i hope ebay has a engine i can get.
I hope this car lasts long enough to be paid off. i still have a year and a half to go.
when you go to buy the impala they should have a disclaimer that says"great project car". cause believe me it's definately a fixer upper. new or not.
the only good thing about the impala's are they look good.my friends say"man your lucky thats a bad ass looking car" if they only new. you can view my car at cardomain.com/id/hatazkillme

Lets see whats gone wrong with mine... o yea all this happened after 49,000 miles
Its a 2000 3.4L with 70,350m
1st: Transmission died due to some type of moisture or some crap like that, well thats what the dealer told me :/. payed like 2-3 grand
2nd: needed new intermediate steering shaft.
3rd: Have needed a number of rotors and pads due to warpage (i never slam my brakes on)
4th: Dexcool got all sludged up had to flush it out(at like 50,000) the manual says Dexcool will last till like 100,000 miles, bullshit! Talked to a mechanic friend of mine he said dexcool actually causes the head gasket to eat away and some of the metals in the engine as well.
5th: Engine mounts are bad have to buy 3 new ones
6th: Driver side window broke needed a new switch or something for like 180 bucks
7th: 2nd Tranny died because the gears started to rip apart(i def dont drive like a dick either) replaced by warranty
8th: 3rd tranny has a solenoid(<---right spelling?) problem car thinks im flooring it when i tap the gas.
9th: Blown head gasket
10th:Fan wasn't working for a week then started
and im sure im forgetting a few things but i keep up on my car and take care of it and its just a piece of shit.
Its a 2000 3.4L with 70,350m
1st: Transmission died due to some type of moisture or some crap like that, well thats what the dealer told me :/. payed like 2-3 grand
2nd: needed new intermediate steering shaft.
3rd: Have needed a number of rotors and pads due to warpage (i never slam my brakes on)

yea these impala's with the 3.4 engine seem to go thru with alot of transmission problems. forgot to put it in original thread, but when my transmission went out dealer said it was because I had a flow master muffler. c'mon am I supposed to believe that these cars are so flimsy and cheap that putting a muffler on it will break the car. ok maybe it will. just glad I didn't get a durango. impala is made cheap but atleast the front wheels won't fall off when making a turn. shit i hope i didn't jinx myself. america is ready for a new car company. to make cars like they used to. lets face it. if a new company made a well made car that looked good performed good , wheels didn't fall off; intermediate steering shaft didn't need to be lubed and all that other stupid shit us impala owners go thru; it would put chevy, ford, and chrysler out of business, and send the japs back to the pacific. (no offense japs). is it wrong that i'm not an effeminate starbucks drinking yuppy. does that mean that If i want a well made car i have to settle with a new accord or 3 series bmw. well damnit I don't want to. THE TIME IS NOW WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING OR IT'LL JUST GET WORSE. AS LONG AS PEOPLE ARE BUYING THESE NEW CARS , AND THERE BREAKING LIKE THIS WHY SHOULD THE AUTO MAKER CHANGE. IF THEY CAN SAVE 4$ BY MAKING A CHEAP HEADGASKET OR INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT, TIMES 2MILLION CARS. THATS A HELL OF A PROFIT FOR THEM.

Well, I am not getting a warm fuzzy on my 02 impala either. Someone I know talked me OUT of getting the extended warranty when I bought it. Something along this line - today's cars can go at least 100k before having any problems extended warranty is a waste. Well ~ I am kicking myself in the butt - $2500+ in the past 3 months so far. Those 100k factory warranties are looking better and better all the time (from the overseas competition). Wish they made a big comfortable cars like the Impala, I think I would be sold. I try to buy American but problems like this make it hard on the consumer... I thought GM had a winner with the Impala series.
2002 Impala, 3.4L
3/9/05 @ 55k miles
9 registered trips to 4 dealers in Central PA - still looking for a good one!!
1. Intake gasket @ 52k - thanks dexcool, $800+
2. Brakes @ ~10k, 15k, 25k, 40k, 50k - warping rotors - $250-350/each time. - had problems all the time, finally the rears were done this last time seems to have fixed the shimmy/vibration when braking lightly at high speeds, I am sure it will return. Front rotors have been turned 3 times now, replacement next.
3. Rear Doors hard to open - still an issue, someone suggested lubing the door seals. Seems the handles are hard to grab.
4. Steering shaft - $220 (twice)
5. I had to replace some steering boots - clunking when turning at low speed (driveways, stop and turns)
6. Ignition switch @ 11k
7. And other parts I am sure I missed.
I have not had any tranny issues yet and the car seems to have enough power for me, that will be about the time I am looking for a new car.
Pros
- I do like the ride, very comfortable
- Cool styling
Cons
- Repairs, Repairs and more repairs.

keeping in tradition with how this board is gone im gonna list the probs my mom has had with her 2001 3.4 L impala
at the moment it has 84k miles on it...we bought it new..and im not sure of the milages (or order for that matter) of these problems
aside from regular maintence....recent repair shop visits were caused by:
Heater core failure...she's now on her 3rd...bad replacement core maybe? not sure
Her turn signals do this fun little thing where, (she claims only when its warm...above 50 deg) they stop working all together...the only way to get them to work again is to screw around with the lever/hazard switch
the most recent problem are her wipers...one day she came home and said her wipers were stuck up...i eventually got them down but they still didnt want to work...so we got them "fixed"
a week later my unreliable truck caused me to have to take her car to work...and that nite the wipers would not work...the mechanic blames a plastic clip...
If she doesnt set the heat right when she's done driving for the day, when she goes to use it in the A.M. she will have no heat...this is due (im told) to a valve somewhere freezing open...
aside from that stuff its been pretty routine although that car eats rotors rather fast....
I'm glad to hear its not just our car

WOW i cant imagine that all them problems if i bought a new car and had half the problems they for sure would b buying it back
let me just say one thing if you buy a ford at a chev dealer or vice versa
always take chev products to chev and ford to ford or what ever
alot of the problem is they have no idea about things like ISS or other alerts GM has out unless they inquire unlikely
and on second note always be sure to buy top quality brake parts never buy the cheap crap just look at the extra 20 or 30 bucks as one day it might save my life ...I had a 91 buick century that was always bad on roters soon as i spent the little bit extra on quality parts it was much better.. Now i have a 00 impala 3.8 with 120,000 kms on it and knock on wood its perfect mind you i upgraded the rotors and pads the day after i picked it up cause when a rotor starts vibrating things like ball joints and tie rods and bushing start going

The dealer has conned me into turning the rotors all but the last time. I insisted on replacing them because of the issues keep happing about every 10-15k miiles. So far I have not noticed any problems with the brakes since the rotors were replaced. Is there a brand of rotor we can trust on our Impala's?

Impalas would be hella more reliable if you had the 3.8...i know some do, but i've noticed the 3.8 is a diehard motor..and usually the tranny they pair it with holds up too

always insist on OEM parts and never reconditioned
i went with the brembo cross drilled and sloted rotors front and back
and a carbon metalic pad make sure when installing rotors that they are ballanced if they are not you could find they give off a vibration

Isn't the 3800 the Buick Series II....no wonder. If my Regal GS & LS had this many problems like most of you I'd have someone steal them and collect on insurance or run them off a cliff...lol.
Plus don't hold your breath on not having any tranny issues (4T65E) after the warranty expires, however, they are great until approx. 90K miles.
Good luck!

GM sort of pulled through on my Intake problem. After a few letters, faxes and a couple phone calls. I received a telephone call the other day from the GM customer assistance center and they are willing to reimburse 50% of the repair (or about $400), which is better than nothing and puts some form of renewed faith in me. The rep I talked to was very calm and polite, she explained even though the vehicle was out of warranty (50k) they were going to help out in the interest of providing customer service. I am sure this forgoes my claim for any class action lawsuit but at least GM is doing something for me.
2002 Impala, 3.4L
3/18/05 @ 56k miles
9 registered trips to 4 dealers in Central PA - still looking for a good one!!
1. Intake gasket @ 52k - thanks Dexcool, $800+
2. Brakes @ ~10k, 15k, 25k, 40k, 50k - warping rotors - $250-350/each time. - had problems all the time, finally the rears were done this last time seems to have fixed the shimmy/vibration when braking lightly at high speeds, I am sure it will return. 3. Rear Doors hard to open - still an issue, someone suggested lubing the door seals. Seems the handles are hard to grab.
4. Intermediate Steering Shaft (ISS) - $220 (twice)
5. I had to replace some steering boots - had clunking in wheel when turning at low speed (driveways, stop and turns). Felt like loose brake caliper or popping cv joint.
6. Ignition switch @ 11k
7. And other parts I am sure I missed.
I have not had the “transmission” issues yet and the car seems to have enough power for me, which will be about the time I start looking for a new car. I don’t think it will be a GM.
Pros
- I do like the ride, very comfortable
- Cool styling
Cons
- Repairs, Repairs and more repairs.

Unless you sign a release of all claims against GM or indemnify them you do not waive ay rights to take legal action against GM under your state's lemon or deceptive trade practices laws, if any or joining in on a class action lawsuit.
All GM did was mitigate damages by acting in good faith and covering $400 of the repair bill. The intake manifold problem has been on notice and a GM TSB has been out on all GM 3.4 engines for a few years now.
Our dealer replaced ours when we took it in for a power steering pump problem before the bumper to bumper expired. We didn't have any problems with the engine or intake nor did we complain but the dealer complied with GM's TSB just for general principle. That's customer service.

Well, I bought a 2004 Impala about a week ago and, so far, no problems. Reading these threads though, I'm glad I got the 5 year 100,000 mile warranty. (I will easily put 100,000 miles on this car in 5 years.) And I took the option for a $0 deductible for all repairs. So if anything goes wrong with this car, hopefully it all happens under warranty. My last car was a 95 Aurora and it was nothing but problems. I paid $5,000 for it and I bet I put over $5,000 in repairs in it.

I think the same. something is wrong with your car front end collision...
about toyota.... good luck with this one, make sure to chage oil on time
toyota engines are crap. had my engine replaced twice on a camry due to oil jelling... so they say

I'll second that! I feel for you Impala owners but I own 3 GM "W" bodies.
A '97 GP GTP (90K miles), '99 Regal LS (98K miles) & '01 Regal GS (40K miles). None of them had any major engine, drivetrain or emissions related problems.
My next door neighbor has a late model Toyota Camry and it has been in the shop at least 3 times. One time they had it hauled away with a wrecker to get it to the dealer. My Nissan 300ZX was a piece of garbage and I got rid of it a long time ago.
I'm Asian-American and I will never buy another rice-burner.

nah man VW is a pretty good company i know tons of people who have them with over 80k miles without problems, and their TDI engine will run till over 100k easily. I cant say that about my impala. I will however check the VW forum out i may be missing something. Hondas seem to run forever also.

VW class A junk.
we are doing at least one engine and a few trannys a week on VW
top of the junk list is the Jetta and The passat. 50K is the limit on
those crappy cars. everything goes bad on them from door switches to
engines and trannys (and the prices... oh you WILL cry when it will go bad).
will never recomened a Volkswagen to none of my customers unless i need an enemy....

Well, enough is enough. Had the rotors turned at 54k (2 months ago) by the dealer w/new pads too, now at 60k (all highway miles) the front end is wobbling around with light pressure on the brakes ~ again.
I looked for the slotted rotors, was told those will wear out brakepads faster and cant be turned because of the slots? Anyone heard of this?
I am trying something different. I took it to a local tire/brake shop, had them replace all 4 rotors (and pads) with replacements from 'NAPA' - using their highend rotors. Hopefully this time I won't have more issues. Will be making a visit to the dealer with the old rotors to see if they will credit the $250 brake job. If I don't see any improvement like 30k miles, I think it is time to start looking for a new car and it won't be GM ~
Just for reference - My 1993 Ford Pickup with 165k miles, only needed to "Turn" the front rotors once so far *(Rears are drum). I have owned about 24 vehicles in the last 18 years (mostly GM) and never have had so many problems with brakes as I have with this impala

You know, a lot of people on this thread make you think that the Impalas are nothing but junk. But you should of had my last car, the 95 Olds Aurora. They only made Auroras for 9 years and the Impalas have been made since the 60 (I think). If you compare how many posts there are in the Aurora forum compared to the Aurora forum, the Aurora forum has about 3 times the amount of posts, and the Impala has been made for 2 decades longer than the Aurora. So in my book, I think I still made a smart choice with the Impala. But I'll probably sell the car before 100,000 miles anyway. I figure I'll sell the car for more money if I can sell it and say there is still a 10,000 mile warranty on it.

In name only. In 1999 - 2000 Chevy introduced the 2000 Impala in FWD form as a corporate clone similar to other GM "W" bodies like the Regal, Intrigue and Grand Prix, etc. However, IMO, the previous Impala was a great car.
BTW - They all have their fair share of problems. :2cents:

Hmm.. Well the only "good" impala is the 3.8 liter...with the biggest brakes avail and such, i have a 2000 monte ss...same thing..3.8 motor the biggest brakes, i have had no problems with any rotor warpage and i am still on my first set of brakes at 52k miles....it seems that the non ss models have probles because of the rotors being to small and such....One thing alot of people dont know is that when they get new rotors they should be turned...i always have done this and never had a problem...I use only walker brake pads(these come stock on corvettes so they must be better right) no squeals nothing...i'd suggest finding someone other than the dealer u went to... I'm assuming the impala u have is a 3.4 liter regular ls model...If so..there are many things u can do to improve it to handle like an ss it just wont have the 3.8 in it...for example the brake upgrade kit with calipers is 280 bucks from gm..and the sway bars for it are 119 all the way around with end links , etc...this will tighten up alot of body roll and make it feel much better...I've been gm since the day i got my license and i have never been let down...i se epost of tranny problems.. all kinds of stuff, its all in how u take care of it.

My wife traded in her 2001 Impala LS which had the Series II 3800 and 4T65E autotransaxle last year for a Japanese car. It had 54K on the odometer. Also it had the bigger disc brakes, handling package and 16 inch wheels with Goodyear Eagles stock.
The brakes were redone once under warranty and again at 50K. Plus it had the torque convertor and pressure control solenoid replaced. Good riddens! :thumbsdow

Like the guy before you said, it's all the way you take care of the car.
she got a Honda.. good luck, if she don't take care of it, it will give
you problems. they all made from the same materials (look at some other forums the grass ain't greener over there pal).
I sell engines and trannys and there is no praticular model that sales more than the other (well besides 95-01 2.2L camry they are the worst engines, something with oil jelling motors with low milages knocking) take more care of your cars guys. they'll last longer and be trouble free for a longer period of times. and DO NOT follow mfg. maintainance periods especially for trans fluid. change it every year or two if you don't drive that much.. will keep it trouble free - and that stands for your wifes new honda too trust me....

Honda??? No but close enough. She got a Nissan Maxima 3.5 SE instead. So far no problems. We'll see how it holds up against my '01 Regal GS (40K miles), '99 Regal LS (100K miles) and '97 GP GTP (92K miles) over a period of time. Personally, I'm not into rice-burners and not ready to give up on GM yet.

Grind the face that goes against the pads on your rotor to make it 'level' to the pads... Simply put.
I've noticed a lot of the troubles Impala's have been the 3.4's If not all of the ones in this post.
I have 2 Impala's with the 3.8, both are solid runners.
Police packaged 2000
~160,000 miles
- Replaced the control arm bushings and front wheel bearings and ball joints at 145k miles, wear issues mostly.
- Flushed out all the dexcool for good. Did that by my own choice.
- Replaced the transmission at 160k, it was a police car after all, its a miracle I got that many miles out of it without troubles.
2003 Impala LS
~40,000 miles
- Brake rotors sucked and needed replaced, no other problems.

Because they 'turn' it as they go. More confusing names they give things, more likely it is that you won't try to figure out how to do it yourself ;)

Well here is an update on my car.....
I have 89,000 miles on it now.
After repeated complaints to a chevrolet customer service person about the transmission and repeated complaint at the repair shop about my transmission it finally went. They would tell me that it's find and the heistation going into reverse would not affect the longivity of the transmission. It happened when i was in the middle of no where and no cell phone service. I was PISSED!!!!!!!!!!!!! So i sat and waited and wouldn't you know it....a wrecker was coming down the road. He stopped and of course picked me up and towed me to the repair shop. After the repair was made at no cost to me by that after market warranty i have, the mechanic told me it looked like the transmission exploded. He said that it was a mess in there. I just recently did a tranny flush on it at 89,000 and had one done when they did that solinoid tranny overhaul. Before the tranny overhaul i had one done also. But the new one is great, feels TOTALLY different then the one that was in it.
Just the other day i replaced the brakes AGAIN...i've got it down to a science...takes me less then 15 minutes a side with new pads and rotors.
I just had the fuel pressure regulator replaced again after is started leaking for the second time. Again warranty covered it.
I have to replace the temp sensor??? it's a sensor that has to do with the electric choke or something when the car is started cold. Something about the engine in an open loop and when it warms up it goes into a closed loop and it doesn't use that temp sensor or something. I would start that car, it would run and stall out, spit and sputter and would wreak of gas. Until it would warm up..and then it would be fine some of the time.
Some of you where talking about how people that don't take care of their cars have a lot of problems. I have taken great car of it and it still keeps failing. I swear this car has been in the shop over 20 times. The place I use to take it refused to work on it anymore because of the extent of the problems. So i had to find another place to take it.
It just really fustrates me the chevy doesn't think there is a problem with it. I have another 10.000 miles on my warranty and i don't know what i'm going to do. I have decided not to get a motorcycle just because of this car and the extra money that i need all the time to keep it going. This car makes me nervous, if i go on a rather long trip, i rent a car instead because i'm afraid that it's going to break down.
At this point, I can't believe the problems i have had, it's just for fricking unreal and at this point i dont' care anymore. Ya the warranty has paid a good portion of it. Everytime somehting goes wrong i have to pay a 200 deductible and also cover what the warranty won't. I don't beat on it have actually babied it the whole time because i dont' want it to break. Hell when the tranny went, i wasn't even pushing on the gas. I actually had my foot on the brake coasting into a turn and when it down shifted it just started all kinds of noises.
I called the bank and i owe about 4,000 on it yet and i think i'm just going to put a for sale sign in the window and get it outta here. Then i'm gonna go and buy a ford.....FUCK GM!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you guys have any comments, questions, suggestions, adive whatever let me know because I like to hear what you guys think.........
Thanks
Mike

If I were you, I wouldn't buy a Ford. I've never heard good things about Ford. I would probably go with Toyota or something like that. The problem with my family is my Dad, one uncle and one aunt works for GM. We are a GM family. If you buy anything else, you'll be disowned. If I wasn't in a "GM family," I would take a very close look at Toyota. They are #1 for customer loyalty and satisfaction. Plus right now, GM is the largest auto manufacturer in the world. But my dad keeps on telling me how Toyota is very close in taking them over on that. Plus Toyota has way more money than GM. Toyota could buy GM about 5 times over.

actually gm is a great car company..they just spent too much time on their suv's and trucks now that gas is goign up no one wants them so now they gotta put their effort back into their cars...if they pu even 1/2 the effort in their cars...then they would be engineered a helluva lot better

bermis, just curious what engine size is your imp. I agree with you "FUCK GM". when my tranny went out it was still under the extended warranty. I STILL had to pay 700$ of my own money. someone in this forum stated "why would you pay if its under warranty"? hell what can you do if the dealer says the warranty only covers certain things. then they start stone walling. friends tell me to sell my car. how the hell would i do that. I bought it new at dealership for 20,000$. I've spent about 5,000$ dollars of my own money in repairs. I still owe about 5,000$ dollars on the car. if i sold it I would still owe gm 5,000$. and resale on on these impalas are about 4,000-6,500$ bucks. so that means if I sold it for 6,000$ dollars pay gm the 5grand AND WOW I WOULD HAVE A WHOLE 1,000$ TO BUY ANOTHER CAR. NO THANKS. why would i sell it and lose all that money, and probably the next person that gets it won't have any problems with it. because i've literally replaced everything! If i trade it in they would add the 5 grand on to the car i'm getting. If someone knows some magical way I could sell the car and not pay back gm, please let me know. p.s. my 97 del sol with over 100,000 miles has not had one problem.

See, I still have less than 3,000 miles on my car so nothing has gone wrong with it yet. But when I bought the car, I decided to go with the extended warranty on the car. My last car had so many problems that I spent as much as I paid for the car in repairs. But when we were finalizing the deal on this car, the salesman started to expain the extended warranty and all the fine print. He got to the spot where it had a deductible on the warranty repairs. I think it was a $500 deductible. They were trying to talk me out of paying the extra money to not have a deductible. (The odd thing though was the salesman was trying to talk me out of paying the extra $1,000 for the $0 deductible.) But my last car I spent over $3,000 in repairs within the last few months. And since I bought the car, I put over $5,000 in repairs into a car that only cost $5,000. I paid the extra $1,000 for the warranty to have a $0 deductible. So I have until 100,000 miles that I shouldn't have to pay a penny if anything goes wrong with this car. (Which my luck, nothing will go wrong with it until 100,001 miles. Then the whole car's probably going to die and not be recoverable.

My 2000 impala has the 3.4 liter. I don't believe that GM put more effort into their cars because they where focusing more on their SUVs. I know they have strict guidelines they have to follow from MDOT and all kinds of companies. I don't believe it also for the fear of a recall because of something that was fucked up. My warranty, well i was talked out of the 0 deductible also. The tried to get me to pay the 1000 deductible....i was very firm and told them i wanted to zero deductible. Well after he went through the fine print of it. It sounded all right....i paid like 2114 bucks and the warranty company was Tech Pro. Well after getting all this crap fixed i was finding my self still paying money because of stuff the warranty wouldn't pay for. I remember having to get the caliper replaced because of a clunking sound, later found out that it didn't need replaced. Well the warranty would cover the caliper, but not the bracket that the caliper it attached to. I asked them why that bracket had to be replaced, he didn't know...go figure. Well after replacing the caliper, the noise was still there....well they ended up replacing the lower control arms and it seems to be fine...
The thing that pisses me off the most is the repeated trips to the dealership, the ungodly prices they want to fix something. Then after complaining about the price...they look at me like 800 bucks is nothing and that i'm just crazy. I have had 7 rental cars in the two year time. I have yet to pay under 250 bucks to have something fixed. The warranty is starting to slack because they have paid about 4 times the amount of what i paid them, the 2114 to fix it. I have been stranded three times. The thing that really pisses me off is being with out my car for a day or two. For me it's like a security thing, i dunno why, but i feel lost without it. I really don't know what to do now, i have gone rounds with chevy with no luck, and i have gone back to the dealership i don't know how many times to bitch.
That salesman you bought the car from seems to wanna be your best friend, after you buy the car, he probably dont' remember your name, and when he sees you come in he darts off into an office to hide.
I think they need to quit the car bombs over in iraq and come over here and start blowing up the car dealerships...lol...i probably should have said that, but thats how i feel....i dunno...i just feel that i'm rambling on.............
At the police department I work at, we have 2 impalas and 3 crown vics. The impalas have been in repeated times for stupid things. Both have been in for transmission work at least 2 times or more. At this point they just sit there. I use to go out in them. But they are cramped, they are front wheel drive and when i go to chase a speeder and stomp on it, the motor is so loud i fear that i'm going to blow the motor. But in a ford, oh man...stomp it to the floor and it's gone, and when i'm pushing the limits on the ford, the motor sounds pretty confident and doesn't have a problem. I dont' think chevy put a lot of thought into their police impalas. I think it was a last ditch effort to keep in the law enforcement world. Why do you think it's so easy to find a police packaged impala with low miles??? No body likes them!!! One of out ford's has over 200,000 miles on it and it's still a good car....i bet you can't get a police packaged impala to last that long....i know for a fact that the police packaged crown vics have a lot of thought into them, because the michigan state police and the ford motor company in flint michigan and in detroit, near where i live work very closely together to make the best crown victoria and make it very versatile.
the cown vic is one of the reasons that i am leaning towards them. I believe the only problem for has the people to like them is because for is so damn popular and they have millions of cars out in there and thats more feedback as far as complaints. Just think about that...
well let me know what you guys think....i put a lot of thought into this post....

First off, I am a fan of the Crown Vic, its a 'Old-Style' car that has been perfected over many many years of development. Ford stuck with what was good for that sort of a car when GM didn't. No argument there.
The Impala's seem hit and miss, My police packaged Imp has 160k on the clock, Just replaced the Tranny, it was still working, more of a pre-emptive repair so I didn't have to think about being stranded someday. I'd say 160k miles of hard use, that tranny held well.
GM did make the Impala a last ditch entry into the law world. Their trucks are far better police vehicles. I can't imagine the milage the Michigan State Police has put on the trucks they have. Always seem them around, always driving, almost as often as the Crown Vics. I didn't even know they had any Impala's in use
If the dealership has been making you pay for "x-whats-wrong-with-it" Have you tried getting quotes from local shops for the same repairs. The only thing i've ever had cheapers at the Chevy Dealer was the transmission (Which came with a 3 year warrenty). It also does well having mechanic's as friends sometimes.
Don't know what else to tell you, other than stick with it, you've put enough time, money and energy into the car at this point.

The Michigan State Police only has a handful of the impalas. I saw one a few times but it was up north this way. They have some brand new tahoes coming out and i saw them first hand where they have all the lights and sirens and all that stuff put on them. The tahoes they have now where going to be used for the weightmaster/motorcade and K-9 units. But a few of the officers wanted the tahoes for road patrol. I saw one the other day with over 300.000 miles on it. But eventaully you will start seeing the new tahoes out there.
I think towards the end of the summer i'm going to get rid of this car and get something else. I am just getting tired of the car driving like a piece of crap. At this point with the milage on it, it's getting to the point where i have to throw parts at it to see if it changes the problem. But as i go I will keep everyone informed on whats going on.

See, I live in Michigan and I live on a dirt road that isn't plowed in the winter (at least regularly). Rear wheel drive is pathetic in snowy conditions, especially on a windy dirt road that is ice and snow covered all winter. I've had many friends that have gone in ditches over the years that have attempted to drive our road with rear wheel drive cars or trucks that were rear wheel drive only.

Very true, I never have problems in bad weather with FWD cars.
I've been seeing more of the old Tahoe's on ebay and such, so they must be finally letting go of them. I wonder how the new ones perform...

well death its funny you say go have fun in your import because my chevy was made in Canada for fucks sake. Im about to give up on this piece of shit and buy a crown vic P71 or a goddamn Honda(which are made in america not imported) cause those little fuckers will run forever. It fucking pisses me off to see my money going down the toilet because a company will sell me a car that they know is a goddamn piece of fucking shit. Man i would just love to take a baseball bat to the head guys of GM right now, nothing in this world would please me more. And any1 on this board that has had a problem with their car would join me if they could i bet.........O yea btw i think the interior of the impala is pretty roomy i never thought it to be cramped, is it possible its just got to much equipment in it?

My impala is also from Canada. I will be knocking you over to get a first piece of those bastards. I just get so fricking tired of this crap...it seems to be never ending. Always something wrong with it and they don't care....because it's not their problem anymore. The next problem i have with this car it's gone...i dont' care what it is. I will take the loss now considering the whole time i've had it it's been a loss. I've been to a few dealers, not GM, and they are going to work with me on a new truck. I'm going to take the loss now because i'm sure something major is going to happen soon and i want it to be someone elses problem.....

All the Impala's are made in Canada to my knowledge. Crown Vic's don't run forever, I know a few people who own the P71 and have had, Ironically a lot of similar problems to Impala's, such as Intakes, bad cat's and such. Not to say that'd keep me from buying one, I <3 the look of black slick tops.
The head of GM do as much with the cars being built as the janitors cleaning the factory. They sit around counting their paychecks. I do believe that the Impala is listed as a Medium sized sedan, vs the Crown Victoria being listed as Full Size. Don't know why, Impala's are quite large...

mine did the same thing many a time. but the last time it did it the engine froze up. that was about 2 months ago. I got a used 3.4 engine from a junkyard and had a buddy put it in. i'm not even mad about the engine going out. when my car crapped out on the highway I coasted of the exit ramp to a parking lot that was being built. two security guards said i had to move it. I told them I couldn't move it. we then got into a scuffle and I end up going to jail. now the judge says i have to do 120 days in county because of this crap. now I realize its my fault for swinging on two security guards, but lets face it. if i was in my import that i own it wouldn't of died on me and i wouldn't have this legal crap!

mmmm very interesting story....blah blah blah....
but how is it suppose to help the guy with the engine shut off problem???
let me see if i got it straight... maybe if he traspass and park the car at a construction area, than he have to look for the guards and start "swinging" at them... than he must face a judge and spend about 120 days in jail and his engine problem will go away.... WOW what a magic. does he have to do all that in the same order or he can mix it up...lol
well my dear pal with the engine cut off problem.. what is the milage on your car? if you have power and the motor cranks it sound like a fuel problem. maybe your fuel pump gone bye bye. disconnect the input hose at the fuel rail and turn ignition on, if pump is good you should see a stream of fuel runnig thru the line... (put that cigarette off before you do that tho)... if no that i can't really tell without seeing the car.... might be a lot of different things... and might be the most little thing..
my wifes 01 maxima had a problem similar to that, but we where lucky the car was in our driveway when it just won't start one morning.
it turned out the main computer decided to leave us to the next life.

I got my car back the other day and it turned out to be the computer. Just out of no where it decided to take a shit....who knew...it doesn't suprize now when it breaks....it's just always a mystery on what it will be and how much it will cost. Seems to run fine, but when it's at idle, it has a little bit of a misfire to it, like it's skipping, it's doesn't have a rythum <sp to it...just misses here and there. I have no idea what it is. Oh well...at least it's still running....chevy sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good you got your car back and it all in working order.
you might want to take it for a tuneup for that little miss, but it is
nothing in my opinion. all cars have a little shake here and there while idle (also the most expensive ones) if yours didn't do it before it was amazing.
well as i said before my wife maxima had the same thing the computer died same way, just won't start one morning.
it is unusual for GM's or Nissans to have that type of problem. most i see at the shop with computer melt down are mazdas and the king of that problem are mitsubishis (what a crap cars)
well take care of that car and it will take care of you i always say
