94 sl2 valve train problems: loud clatter, no vacuum(it actualy blows out!) chain is solid(not a broken tensioner). pulling head off for rebuild/valve job, what is the best way to do this. engine in car or out? I got ac, exaust, and most of the intake system off. any help will do.

let me guess the oil gets dirty real fast? are there little peices of plastic/rubber inside the valve cover? take a closer look at the guides for the timing chain. i bet they are really chewed up. little peices of the guides then got into the oiling system, clogged it up, starving the lifters of oil(nosiey) and sending your crackcase pressure thru the roof(simular to blow-by). this is happening to my 94 SL2 right now too after 168K miles. if this is the case, all the timing parts need replaced(comes in a kit for about $200). i'm plan a whole rebuild when i fix mine including replacing the bearings, rings, and oil pump. if you are just doing the timing chain and/or head, you can leave it in the car. clear the oil gallerys too if you can.
