I have a 2000 Tacoma 4x4 and the transmission already going out at 68,000 miles. Pretty dissappointing considering the reason I bought this truck is because of all the hype I heard about thier longevity. Anyways I am wondering if a tranny from a 94 4wd will work in my 00'? I found one with 30,000 on it and no problems. Also when I get this bad tranny out where can I go to find replacement bearings for it??

Don't know the answer to your questions, but how exactly did your transmission fail? I had the transmission on my 1999 2.7L 4x4 replaced (see my post 1999 Transmission Whine (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=306784)) and everything inside the original tranny (both bearings and gears) was shredded up. So it may be more complicated than just replacing bearings, assuming you want to keep your old tranny as a backup.

Well, it hasn't exactly failed yet but it sure whines loud. Almost embarrassed to start it in public. It sounds like driving in reverse, especially in first gear and then tones down throughout the rest of the shifting. I had put 1200 into it and had a new flywheel, clutch and throwout bearing put in. The mechanic who did this for me told me the noise would go away when he replaced the throwout bearing. Well it didn't and then he wasn't sure what exactly it was but it was probably a bearing near the transfer case and to go ahead and drive it with the noise it wasn't hurting anything. Yah, right, whatever man!! So I took it to two other mechanics who agreed it was a bearing but they said I should not drive it and get it fixed asap. Before it seized up the whole tranny. I'm stuck--I've got a lemon of a truck and people jerking me around left and right. I have half a mind to take it to a dealership and trade it for something new so that I don't have the headache anymore. I would like to fix it but don't really have a shop to work on it or the time. And paying someone on top of a truck not will work out to be a 2800 dollar payment for one month.....no thanks. I like toyota's still I just got one that was rode hard and put away wet. What would you do? I'm in the middle of deciding!!Don't know the answer to your questions, but how exactly did your transmission fail? The tranny whine sounds a lot like mine. Mine was annoying me pretty badly too, and even after having the transmission replaced with a brand new one, it still whines the same! The whine is definitely coming from inside the transmission, and not from the clutch kit. I've discussed this with several other tacoma owners with the same problem (in person and online) and it seems like the transmissions will keep on going for a long while (how far I don't know), despite the fact they are basically shredding themselves up inside. It must be a design or manufacturing flaw that would cost Toyota a heck of a lot to own up to, so that's why we maybe aren't hearing about any recalls on them. I'm not sure I would consider it a lemon, though.
I don't know what to recommend; that's a hard one, especially cuz money's always tight when this stuff comes up. So if you can put up with it, maybe get the tranny flushed, fill it with a good synthetic oil, and wait until it actually fails to pay for the work? If you haven't called around to transmission shops, maybe see what a few of them say about the whine and the 94 transmission option.

i have a 2000 taco. 60k+ miles. ive been hearin a squeak/rattle in which i thought was coming from the bed.sounds like a loose bolt with a washer rattling.but now this sound has gotten much louder and i realize its come from the tranny. going down hill in 2nd gear about 25mph w/ foot off the gas sounds like like the tranny is gonna drop..when i push in the clutch the noise completely disappears.anyone else experiencing or have experienced this problem?..its annoying as hell to listen to...
