Ok,

Had the SES light come on again (and went off a day later), took advice of one of the posters on this forum and had Autozone plug in their computer before I take it to get fixed.

It came up a 'Camshaft Position Sensor, Bank 1.'

Anyone have any input on this? Similar message? I believe it has to do with the emissions on the car. 2001 525i.

Thanks for your replies.

Unfortunately, this is what you get from 'generic' scan tools. The only 'banks' BMW refers to on M50's is 1-3 & 4-6 cyl's. Your engine has an intake AND an exhaust Cam Sensor. Both fail but the Exhaust more often than the Intake though the Exhaust is easier to replace [it's on the R/F of the cyl. head].......either throw a dart or get a MoDiC or GT1 Fault Survey to be sure what's actually failed.
