we have a 2002 sl1 1.9 soch saturn and when you are stopped and the auto trans is in drive it has a gurgeling/loud rattleing noise/vibration from the valvetrain/timing chain area
it has been doing this since new, but it keeps getting louder,
the car has 77000 miles on it now,
also it does not idel as smooth as it used to, replaced the spark plugs at 60000 miles.
so any help would be gratefully accepted.

and oh yes it has not had very many (oil changes) (wifes car, she"s a

complete #%&ch) and wont let me touch her percious car

now its falling apart
this car has been pretty reliable and excellent on fuel

thanks

"gurgeling" does not relate to any of the common transmission problems i know(which have more to do with "slaming" into gear) best i can say is have the dealership look at it.

the later SOHC tended to suck the intake manifold gasket into the runners (normally cylinders 1 & 2). with the engine running, spray some carb and choke cleaner around the intake manifold. if the engine bogs down, you found your vacuum leak

if you take care of it(change the oil every 3000K or before) the engine will last you 100K or 150K easily. i think the record for the SOHC engine is somewhere just over 400k miles.

ANYONE HAVE ANY NEW IDEAS?
the car still does the same thing.... my ideas are all old. :)

Sounds similar to what my buddies toyota tacoma was doing, noise and all. As S suggested above, It turned out to be that the intake manifold gasket was bad. at rough idle, we cut off some of the air supply comming into the carb (cupped hands over it) and it evened out. Fuel injection, I dunno, maybe take out the air filter and cover some of the hole up and see what happens. (that might be a reallly dumb idea).

you already tried the choke cleaner, and got all the way around with it?

alternatively, you could just pull it off and replace the gasket for the hey of it.
