This may be stupid but does anybody think that VTEC would engage in reverse?

...hmmmm...

dont wanna be rude or anything but what has that got to do with street racing????? do you race backwards???? if so dose that mean you`ve won before youve started????

the vtec solonoid doesn't care or know what gear you're in, if you could go fast enough in reverse to reach the vtec engagement point for whatever engine you're talking about, then yes, it would engage.

I don't know if you've caught on but not everything posted for discussion in this forum is Directly Racing Related.

maybe so but they usually have more relevance than racing backwards. . .

So how is V-tec engaging in reverse "directly racing related", I must be missing something?

Nobody said anything about racing backwards.;)

This is about simple physics of an engine.

Sorry I meant to say "is not"...

You could be onto something here though, "new backwards street racing" could be a bit of a challenge, it wouldnt half give you a criche in your neck.

They actually have organized backwards racing somewhere...I think someone posted a video of it about a year ago or so in this very forum.

I don't know but the guy who is asking the question is the one whose signature has an engine with a VTEC on it in big letters. Someone who has a VTEC engine should just try it out.

uhm.....

how do you think reverse driving works?
I mean, you could've meant it as a joke
or do you actually think, the crank will rotate backwards when in reverse? gears..

the engine does exactly the same like in a 'normal' forward mode..
so, YES

And for those of you who don't want to read 13 pages, yes it does work in reverse, someone tried it with an rsx

thats odd. becasue V-TEC doesn't just rely on RPM to engage. it also looks at throttle position i believe. that being said, it must be computer controlled. i'm sure there are sensors in the tranny that will let the ECU know thats in reverse. since the car is in reverse and the ECU knows it, i don't think it would work unless honda engineers missed that point when designing the car.

but what do i know? its just a theory, if someone tried it and it works, then it works.

VTEC engagement relies an many factors. Being, RPM, Throttle, Speed, Oil Pressure, Engine temperature etc...

Your car has to be moving at least 13mph, your car has to be warmed up, oil pressure has to be high enough, you need to give at least (i believe) 50% throttle, and you have to be at VTEC engagement rpm's.

So in theory, if your car was warmed up, and you could hit 13mph in reverse before your rpm's hit engagement point (in my car its 5200rpm). VTEC would engage.

H22a Redline is 7800rpm's so there's a good chance you can get to 13 by then.

if it counts for anything i can make boost in reverse.. i dont recomend trying it.. i was board one day at work and home depo has a big empty parking lot...

First off, who started this "he wants to race in reverse" garbage?
Who said anything about that? As I stated before, this is just a stupid engine physics question.
