drove my 2001 saturn sl last night and clutch lost pressure, totally to the floor. checked the clutch fluid resevoire, empty. added fluid, intermittent pressure, but noticed leak. took car to Midas today, they changed slave cylinder and attempted to bleed to re-establish pressure. still no pressure, so changed master cylinder also. Parts cost $370! Went online to try to verify the cost of the parts, no luck...Can anyone confirm that my car's master/slave cylinder should've cost that much? Thanks. Also, read somewhere that the saturn clutch system is "sealed" and can't be bled. Is is possible to cause damage from trying? Appreciate any insight...

many clutch hydralic systems are filled and bleed at the time of manufactoring, even if one needed bleeded, the cylinder can be at wierd angles so the proper way to do it would be removing the hydralic and "bench bleed" them off the vehicle. i don't know what saturn does, but etherway, i doubt Midas drove to the saturn dealership to buy the OEM parts, they used their aftermarket version, so anything is possible. three years ago i had my clutch replaced at a dealership, saturn's standard procedure is to replace the hydralic system too, the total for everything parts and labor was 1075. the RO parts list says "cylinder" for $148.04. weather that is the master, the slave, or both, i don't know.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm not sure what "RO" stands for, but I'm going to call Midas tomorrow to find out what I paid for. The invoice just says "clutch as" and part #: 21120536. Thanks again for your reply.

RO = Repair order, just a fancy name for paperwork

Here's the follow up:
Called Saturn, they charge $184.72 for the part number I gave them. Went back to Midas, they said their normal "mark up" is to double the price of the part. This covers their cost to get the part and to be able to offer their one year warranty. I could've gotten the part myself, but then I wouldn't have the one year warranty anymore. So, basically bought Midas an extra master/slave cylinder since mine probably won't crap out within the year. Oh well...now I know.
