Russ1323,if you can go to Autozone auto parts and they will scan the codes for free. Then when you get them post them on this thread and we can try to help you then.

I am having the same problem. I will try the Autozone thing although my local mechanic has done the scan already and reset the code. The dealer says they have a better scanner than the locl mechanic for finding stuff. Is that true?

You never posted what the code was that AutoZone read for you. Was it something like a code 401? It's an EGR valve error, or so it says. If you say it runs fine, you can try to unplug the battery to do a reset. The check engine light should be off now. If your light comes back on again after a bit. Actually during an idling condition, then most likely your EGR sensor is bad. Ford had a real problem with them. I do know that Ford made a change on them recently. However, AutoZone will charge you $80 for the replacement part. You can get the new style from Ford for about $35. The new part number is: 4U7Z-9J460-AA. I actually purchased it at a Ford truck store. Don't pay anyone to change it though. It takes less than a minute to pop out the old and put in the new one. It's right up front next to the battery. I am basing this from what I just did on my 2001 Windstar.
Hope is helps!
