Keyless Entry

:screwy: Does anyone know how to program a keyless entry remote for a 98' Bonneville? I don't have either of the original remotes and I was going to purchase one off of eBay but I want to make sure I can program it first. Can anyone help? Oh, and yes the car came with keyless entry, RPO code: AU0 found on the ID label.
Thanks, G.W.

Simple. Make sure the key fob you purchase looks like the one you originally had, and is a GM key fob. Once you have it, open the fob, pop out the rubber insert, pull out the chip, and carefully slide the battery completely out. (If the batteries dead replace it now) Now reassemble the same way you just took it apart, walk out to your car, and hold both the lock and un-lock at the same time for 'bout 7 seconds. Your car should now be accessable with the key fob.

Thanks for the info G-bonnedude. I have not bought the remote yet, but I am glad you gave me that info. Maybe it will save me $80 to have one programmed!

are you sure??? because if it were that simple wouldnt it be really easy to program it 2 someones car and steal shit in it?!? I think what you are thinking is not to reprogram it but to resyncronize it because after quite a while and sometimes after replacing the batteries it will lose syncronization and all you would have to do it resyncro it, and that is how you do it on my 94, I think that programing it will take a little more effort than that because if GM made it that easy... there would have been a recall on that a long time ago....... just recheck the info.... but if it works than shit GM is dumb good luck!

That will only work if the remote was already "married" to the car using the GM ODBD2 scan tool or (for your car), the following procedure:

1996-1998 Bonneville

ALL TRANSMITTERS MUST BE PRESENT WHEN PROGRAMMING NEW REMOTES!

1) Turn OFF ignition switch
2) Use a 3 amp fused jumper wire and connecte the terminal 8 (blk/wt) and terminal 4 (blk) wires at the data link connector. The data link connector is located on the drivers side bottom of dash panel
3) Close all the doors
4) Turn ON the ignition switch. The locks will cycle to LOCK
5) Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK on one of the transmitters for 30 seconds.
6) After a 30 second delay the doors will LOCK and UNLOCK.
DO NOT TURN OFF THE IGNITION!
7) Repeat step 5 for each additional transmitter
8) Disconnect jumper wire from data link connector. Then turn ignition off and verify functions.

eBay is a good source for a replacement transmitter, but understand that they are NOT interchangeable. You must use the ONE that is meant for your car.

Sorry to necro this, but it's something that's bugging the crap out of me. It just won't work, and I have the remotes that came from the factory with the car. According to my parents (from whom I bought the '97 Bonneville SE), one day in a grocery store parking lot when trying to unlock it, it started honking and such and wouldn't turn off nom atter what they tried until eventually they either hit the magic combo or it just timed out. After that the remotes never worked again. They went and had the batteries changed, and it didn't work then, either. I started looking into it recently, and tried the whole "Hold Lock/Unlock together for 7/8/10 seconds" thing to see if they just needed to be resynced. No dice. So I found something about reprogramming and thought I'd give it a shot.

These instructions are by far the best I've seen. Most suck, quite frankly. However, one thing ends up not quite working right.

1) Turn OFF ignition switch

Check.

2) Use a 3 amp fused jumper wire and connecte the terminal 8 (blk/wt) and terminal 4 (blk) wires at the data link connector. The data link connector is located on the drivers side bottom of dash panel

That took a bit of figuring out, but I finally managed to just insert a paperclip in where it was deep enough to hold it there. I used the following image as the guide regarding which was 8 and which was 4:

http://www.firekite.com/store/misc/pics/misc6/bonneville_dlc_layout.gif

3) Close all the doors

Easy enough.

4) Turn ON the ignition switch. The locks will cycle to LOCK

Wait! Mine cycled to LOCK and then back to UNLOCK! Is there something odd going on, here?

5) Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK on one of the transmitters for 30 seconds.

Can do.

6) After a 30 second delay the doors will LOCK and UNLOCK.

No joy. After holding the buttons at the same time for a good 45 seconds, the locks had still not cycled.

8) Disconnect jumper wire from data link connector. Then turn ignition off and verify functions.

Yeah, this step confirmed my fears: no workie.

So, any ideas? Am I just SOL? Should I just go have an aftermarket remote starter/alarm with an ugly-as-sin key fob and call it a day? I'd be happy with just remote lock and unlock :(

I tried the same procedure but after 30 seconds of holding the lock/unlock buttons down, nothing happened. So I then pushed down the button for the trunk and then I heard the doors lock/unlock. I removed the jumper, turned the key off and then the remote worked fine.

Yeah, the above procedure worked fine.

whilst holding the lock and unlock on fob, you should be first holding down lock button on the door.

Hello

Thanks for all the info and the pic. I have a 97 Pont Bonneville and I'm trying to program the key fob. I have done all of the instructions but at the end after the cyckling of the locks after the 30 second,s and following the instructions @ the end the fob doesn't work.
Any suggestions on what the next step I might try? Thanks again.

You will need to find out if the numbers on the back of the remote will work with your car before you buy it. Just because it looks the same doesn't mean it will work. Check with your dealer to confrim first. Then follow the instruction already posted.

The key fob I bought was from the dealer. I brought my vin so has to get the right one.
Everything works up till the point, I try the fob after programing. I get the cycling after 30 second,s but the fob doesn't work.

I wait to turn the key off, like told to also. But not workin.

Did it get wet or something else? Maybe the FOB is bad, that is if your doing the programming like stated above. You said you bought it from your dealer does it have a warranty?

Ok yes I believe there is a warranty. Its only couples days old. I have followed the instructions as above so has to get the door locks to cycle after 30 second,s.
It just doesn't work after last step!
Just that might have been some other trick.
Back to the dealer to replace and try again. Oh bother! Thanks ill post what happens.
