won't shift from park

When I start the engine, the shifter does not want to shift from park.
Does anyone have an answer?

Sorry. It is a 1998 Sable with automatic in console.
I have found that after turning on ignition, I can apply
the brake and while simultaneously coming off the brake
and depressing the button in the shift lever, it will go into
gear. What do you think?

I had this same problem with my 98 Sable. The problem turned out to be the brakelight switch. Had that replaced and it has worked fine since.
