I have searched this forum for threads regarding this problem but I haven't found anything that is exactly like this so I will explain.
I have a 98 Windstar GL with 114000 k. Last month CEL came on and i noticed a broken flex line on exhaust. Before I got the van in for service the CEL went off. That week I had the flex line repaired.
Now a month later the CEL has again turned back on. It stays on. About 2 mths ago I had the spark plugs replaced. Every two or three months I put injector cleaner into the gas.
Can anyone help?
Andrew

Sounds like the right time and mileage for a "catalyst efficiency" code. AutoZone will "read" the codes for you WHEN the CEL is on. Other common causes for an intermittand CEL are:
-fuel cap off/not sealed properly
-EGR ports clogged
-dirty MAF sensor (lean both banks)

Forgive my ignorance but what is a catalyst effiency code?
I will try putting a film of oil around my gas cap and see if that helps seal it. Is the other sensor you mentioned the one in the air filter?

Andrew

"Catalyst Efficiency" is how well your catalytic converters are working.
EGR ports.....These are in your lower intake manifold.....and I have cleaned these on my '96 windstar 3.8L......not as bad as it sounds....and there are threads on here that talk about that.
Also LewisNC has some pictures on his yahoo group.....
MAF...."Mass Air Flow" sensor......this is in the canister that is in between the air filter and the flexible hose going to the throttle body. You can clean this with a non-residue electrical cleaner.
There is a screen.....make sure it is clear of stuff.....and you will see a little plastic cross piece....with an air inlet (facing into the air flow) and an outlet....(Facing away from the air flow)....This is where you want to spray the cleaner.
But....as ModMech has advised....DO go have your codes read at Autozone or other auto parts store....
They will do it for free. And it will help you find your problem.

Thanks for your help,
I took the first advice and looked at the gas cap. There is a small rubber O-Ring in the gas cap that seals when you tighten the gas cap. Mine had a twist in it. I purchased a new cap and put a little bit of engine oil on my finger and coated the O-Ring on the new cap.
After driving aprox. 150 km the engine light went off.
Hopefully this is the cure. Time will tell if it comes back on again.
Thanks to both of you for your info. I'm sure it will all come in handy in the future.
