97 Sable rough idle

My 97 Sable 3 liter vulcan engine idles rough when cold and surges when driving until it is completely warmed up. My mechanic can't seem to find the problem. Any suggestions?

What gas are you putting in it?
I find while a higher octane does perform well at higher rpm's, it doesn't idle nicely...
try switching gasolines, brand etc...
