Steering/Key ect Total Lockdown

My 1995 540i is totally locked down. I can't get the key to move in the ignition and the steering is totally locked in place with no play. The only things working are the security system, interior lights and the locks.
Even the headlights will not come on. Emergency warning lights work too.

The last time we were in the car my seven year old yanked the steering wheel as I was turning off the car and removing the key.
If he damaged the steering so that I can't get the key to turn would you expect these type of symptoms? Is it something I can easily fix or do I need to have it towed to the dealer?

Could it be something else?
Is this how the drive away theft protection works? Other potential problems? Many thanks in advance.

Try turning the wheel and holding it while your try to turn the key. There is a system designed when the steering wheel is locked and the car is off you cant turn the ignition. Many cars have it.

The steering wheel will not budge. It is locked tightly in place. The wheels are turned at a slight angle and the steering wheel is 180 degree from straight ahead.

I was able to get around the problem by disconnecting the battery for an hour to cut power. Seems like it was part of the security system and cutting power reset the system.

Have the ignition/steering lock replaced while you can still drive it [ as apossed to having it towed ].
The locks wear and break causing what you experienced [ has NOTHING to do with the electricals or security system ] or it may get to a point where you won't be able to turn the ignition off.

You will have to exert enough force to the steering wheel to unload the lock mechanism while turning the key.

Just a note, the E36 & E39's do use the same steering lock and I've had many towed in for replacement,.......just a note.
