Popping noise from dash?

I have a 2004 Impala and occasionally there is this cracking/popping noise coming from the passenger side of the dashboard. It sounds very much like a rock hitting the windshield.

It seems to happen randomly and I have no idea what this could be. Anyone experience this?

I have (had) a similar problem. I have a 2002 Impala LS with 105,000 miles on it. I heard a LOUD crack/pop noise that I thought was coming from the windshield - similar to when a rock hits your window. I ignored it for awhile until I noticed that it happened when no cars were on the road. I took it to the dealership and they could not duplicate the problem. Eventually I saw crack that started below the windshield. I can only guess that is the popping noise I heard...

Hey guys, I would take your Impala into the shop asap. My 2002 Impala had the same problem, except mine was followed by a dead battery one day about a year ago. I took it to the local Merchant Tire Automotive center and they replaced the battery stating that the battery should not have gone dead so soon. I picked up the car it everything seemed fine. The next morning the battery was dead again. I jumped it took it back in and they did a diagnostic on the electrical system. They found that there was a short, however they could not pin point the problem other than to say it was in the line between the drivers seat and the radio. The car had 37K and some change on it so they suggested I call the dealer. The dealership (Koons of Tyson’s Corner VA) told me to bring it in and they would take a look at it at no charge. After having the car for three days they called and said it was a short in the drivers seat and that they rewired it and I could pick it up. They did not charge me and I went on my way. Once again all seemed fine until I tried to start the car the next day. When I turned her over there was that loud POP again and the car went dead. I jumped her and brought it back to the dealer who again had it for three days and called saying they could not find what it was other than a short somewhere in the electrical between the dash and the drivers seat. They then brought it to one of their other dealerships who had an electrical expert. (come to find out it was their Ford dealershipJ ) They pulled out the radio, all the wiring between the dash and the drivers seat (or that which was connected to both) and all the speakers in the car and replaced it all. This has solved the problem and I have not had any issues since. When asking the dealer what this would have cost me I was simply told “ you don’t want to know” Kudos to Koons and Chevy for picking up the tab, but I would watch that popping sound, if you don’t see a crack in the windshield it could be a lot worse.

I have the same sound in my 2003 Impala. Haven't noticed it since the weather has got cooler.

There is a TSB available which may explain this:
03-08-49-023 DEC 03 Interior - Popping/Snapping Noise from Instrument Panel

http://www.alldata.com/TSB/10/031019GN.html

Has anyone got a copy of this TSB they could share?

Cheers

you guys need to calm down, all it is is the expanding and contracting on the car.

Im sure you have heard cracks like that in your house when it is warming up outside.

Push on the dash a little, and it will make the sound (but not as loud)
