well this is one of a few projects im fixing to start. I've got the 88 mustang, this and im gonna pick up a 71 charger on sunday. they are all replicas of real cars. this one is for a girl i know. she wants an 04 Mach 1. im starting with teh 99 cobra kit from revell. the biggest problem i forsee from the get go is the hood. having not worked with putty work of that sort it is gonna be a chore. i have some styrene and tamiya epoxy putty on the way from pegasus. has anyone done this kit before? i noticed there are 2 intake setups and 2 sets of valve covers. no pictures just yet. i'll try and snap some friday

well i got bored and took a few pictures

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/10820mach1modelhood.JPG

notice the recess in the hood? that has to be changed into a hump and a hole cut for the "shaker" which also has to be scratchbuilt

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/10820mach1model.JPG

i assembled and re worked the glue seams in the seats *i hate kit seats*
the motor was sprayed with testors silver metallic. i think it gives a good representation of the aluminum used for the motor. and i also have to scratch build a lip for the front valance. this is definately gonna be my most detailed build yet....stay tuned

i dont have photo shop. im working on limited multimedia resources. the pictures are all taken with my camera phone. as soon as my putty and styrene arrive i'll start the hood.

you dont need photoshop. Just use the stock paint program that comes with all PC's. Go to Picture and then Sketch/Skew (i belive) and change the picture size percentage.

Looks like an intesting build.

I've thought about taking on this same project. Like you said, the hood is an issue (including the 1969 Mach 1 hood scoop) but also the front seats are a little different and to me the hardest part would be replicating the Mach1 wheels... there's a big difference between these wheels and regular GT or Cobra wheels...

good luck with it, I'll be following this to see what problems/issues your run into. I hope you don't mind but I'm going to learn from you.

white97ex
09-10-2004, 01:55 AM
thats cool. thats what this site is all about...helping each other out. i wasn't aware that the seats were different. as for the wheels. im thinking about going for the pro street look and grabbing some pegasus torque thrusts and sleeves. much like oakiemodelers classics. i know thats kind of cheating but hey. my biggest thing is the body. getting the hood right. the chrome emblems on the fender wont be there. i'll have to have the mach 1 stripe that goes along the bottom made. the intake is gonna be a chore. im not sure if i will make the part going from the shaker to the filter. thinking about maybe picking up the saleen model and putting the supercharger on it. not sure yet

white97ex
09-12-2004, 12:41 PM
well no pics on progress as all i have been doing is cleaning up the mold lines on parts. i plan on using pegasus 23" T's will put in the order some time this week i hope, that way i can start mockin up and modifying the suspension and wheel wells.

white97ex
09-13-2004, 10:19 PM
well, my box of goodies showed up today. im starting on the shaker as i type this. once i get it all figured out and the parts cut, i'll snap a pic before they are assembled

white97ex
09-13-2004, 11:53 PM
well i got some done. havin a little trouble gettin the scoop to look right. again these pics aren't the greatest but you can get the idea

anybody still following this? here is some more progress. keep in mind this is my first time to use epoxy putty

i have since started shaping the hood. and i replaced the lip on the facia. i originally uses .020 strip. i cut a new lip from .030 and attached it. much sturdier. any tips please feel free

Eric Cole
09-15-2004, 06:40 AM
I'm still watching... you could use the hood scoop from one of the existing AMT 1969 Mach 1 or the Revell Mach 1. The hood looks like it's taking the proper shape but when you go to install the hood scoop to the top of the engine you're going to have a lot of putty and plastic to cut through on the hood.

.....I'm not sure of a better way to do it. It's just an idea but maybe cut the center section from the hood and build a raised area out of plastic sheet then smooth/blend the edges with putty.

I think you're on the right track with the look of the car...

white97ex
09-15-2004, 11:37 AM
thanx for that tip. i found the amt mach 1 on the model express site. i'm gonna go thursday to the hobby lobby and michaels and see if i can find it. that way i dont have to pay shipping...im hopin i'll get the body ready for paint sometime today. well the shell anyway. no way i'll have the hood ready. is the wing on the back the same as the one on the 69 mach? if so im definately getting the amt kit

white97ex
09-15-2004, 11:41 AM
oh....does anyone know where to get custom decals made? i need the black mach 1 stripe that goes along the bottom of the door

Eric Cole
09-15-2004, 12:43 PM
The wing on the back is not like the 1969 Mach1 or the Cobra kit's wing, although it is closer to the one on the 1969 Mach1. Do a search and compare the 04 mach1 to the 69 mach1

Eric Cole
09-15-2004, 12:45 PM
the one in the 98 saleen kit is more accurate but would still need some work. File the lip down around the side and back edges a little and it'll be close to the 04 Mach1 wing

white97ex
09-15-2004, 08:39 PM
i do greatly appreciate your help. i should have the hood finished tonight, other than cutting the hole. i'll try and get a shot of the whole car. it will be in primer ready for paint.

white97ex
09-15-2004, 11:50 PM
well i got some pictures of the hood on the body. imho it looks good. have a little finish work to do on the hood. that should be done by the nights end. im goin to michaels and hobby lobby tomorrow and hopefully i find that mach 1 kit. then i can finish up the body. workin on all the detail stuff right now. gonna try and get the motor done, belts pully's reservoirs. all that junk enjoy the pics...

Where's the shaker at? You do know the Mach 1 has a shaker, right?

white97ex
09-16-2004, 06:22 PM
yeah...did you read the whole post? i was in the middle of scratch building it. when mach1 2003 pointed me toward the amt 69 mach 1 kit with the shaker. i am in the process of ordering that as i type this.

white97ex
09-16-2004, 06:23 PM
oh, dont worry, i got plenty of reference pics...that was the first thing i did, before i even cut the plastic

86_SR5
09-16-2004, 06:52 PM
Oh, I'm very sorry. I skiped right over that, hurry up and make more progress now.

white97ex
09-16-2004, 06:59 PM
lol...its gonna be slow going...i've just about got the motor done. gonna get some wire and attempt to wire it. as for the rest of the car. i'll finish the interior and then its a waiting game on the other kit and the wheels. has anyone used the 23" pegasus sleeves before. oakiemodeler told me about the new 23" t's i was wondering what the width was and whether i need to modify the wheel wells at all. if so i might just go with regular torque thrusts. i saw a cobra on here with the regular T's on it and it looked good

white97ex
09-22-2004, 06:25 PM
well i've got a little progress, and some outside pics, althought the light wasn't the best. hopefully my mach 1 should be here by the end of the week. enjoy

i think the interior needs toned down a little..maybe a shot of dull coat?

86_SR5
09-22-2004, 06:41 PM
I agree with the dull coat. It's a shame however, I got the same interior in my Super Stallion mustang which is quite a few years difference. Tsk Tsk Revell. Hope that mach 1 gets there soon.

looking forward to see more! I'm thinking of using the same kit to build a saleen ;)

white97ex
09-22-2004, 10:04 PM
this and my 88 are going to be painted the same white color. i kinda hate to kit bash the 69 mach i have coming. would like to have a stable of white mustangs, maybe create like a miniature car club and call it white lightning..lol

white97ex
09-27-2004, 09:57 PM
well, i got the 69 today. the quality of this kit seems really good. i'll start a progress thread on it when i get my bench cleared of the mach, the 88 and the charger i just started. lol. the shaker needs a little work. actually it needs a lot to be an exact replica. but it's gonna get a little work so it will pass my quality test, im kinda burned out on this one..lol. i'll try and get some pictures tonight, i am off to work now. hopefully soon i'll be able to order the wheels

white97ex
09-28-2004, 12:44 AM
well i got the hole cut in the hood and the shaker mocked up. here is the pic. its not the best but it will have to do.

i need to adjust the angle a little i think..and possibly the height.... comments welcome

It's a tad too far up from what I can see.

white97ex

the whole bulge or the shaker itself.

white97ex
09-28-2004, 01:14 AM

From the angle of the first pic the shaker looked as if it was sitting right at the top of the cowl. From that side pic you can tell it's positioned perfect.

Eric Cole
09-28-2004, 06:34 AM
I would agree, it's positioned very well.

Looking good so far....

white97ex
09-28-2004, 09:32 AM
thank you for the comments. The angle needs to be adjusted slightly. i am hoping that the tilt of the motor in the chassis will be enough to make it look the way it should. Now i need to track down a good picture of the rear wing and get on scratchbuilding that so i can get this thing painted.

Eric Cole
09-28-2004, 10:04 AM
I don't know if it's possible or even feasable at this point but the scoop on the real car is actually mounted to the top of the engine and there is a hole in the hood for the scoop to protrude through when the hood is closed.
A lot more trouble and maybe not worth it just for appearence sake??

white97ex
09-28-2004, 02:36 PM
yeah...im going to attempt to mount it to the engine. i want it to be as realistic as possible...the hole i cut in the hood goes all the way through. the shaker is kind of cartoonish, as in the height. it is a lot taller than i wanted..but it'll be ok

GvEman
09-28-2004, 03:29 PM
Tha is a sweet ride you have there! i realy loves the mustang of that year. keep it up! and by the way. on the pics i hav seen of the 04 mustang mach 1 the scoop is a bit lower... it apears as it anyway. and then the shaker comes lower down..

http://www.classicdesignconcepts.com/products/product_art/chin_spoiler99.jpg

here is a picture of the engine... but i gues that you alredy have this one..

white97ex
09-28-2004, 10:31 PM
actually..i did not have those pictures..they are much better quality than the ones that i have. yeah. i realized that the back of the "scoop" or bulge on the hood, should slope back toward the hood making it more of an arch. but i dont feel like going back to working on that putty....lol i acheived a look i was happy with and it was proportionate so i left it. lol. thanks for the comments tho. i might have another go at this model in the future when my skills with putty advance. thanx for looking.

amazing....over 1400 views and only 40 replies. i think i need to start doing skylines. lol. well i ordered the wheels finally, i got a set of 23" T's and some regular T's to see which look best. im hopin the 23's look killer, i also ordered some pegasus 19" disc brakes, anyone ever used them?

40 replys is still better than 90% of the thread here.

I get all my pictures for model building off Ebay. Dealers take really good detailed, comprehensive pictures of the cars they're trying to sell, and you can find just about any year, make and model you want. You have more guts than I do trying to build the Mach! When I built my Cobra, I used $0.94/can silver spraypaint from WalMart and it matched the engine color perfectly; it also works for exhaust and other aluminum trim. Also, I've found that Testors flat black simulates the black leather that Ford uses really well.

Here's a pic of the engine out of a 99 Cobra my boss and I rebuilt last year, hope it helps!

awesome..i was actually picking up some gray primer (color plcae) from wal mart. got to love my 10% discount. and i saw the aluminum paint. thought i would give it a try and see how it turned out. thanks for the tip. as well as the one on the flat black. I use the grey primer. its called equipment gray primer. to simulate grey interior. i have been really pleased with it thus far. thats what we need a thread on. what colors simulate certain things. and your experience with them.

white97ex
10-01-2004, 12:47 AM
well, i tried out that color place aluminum just now and i love it. thank you for that tip

well it is midnight here....and i am painting....lol. i got the wing done, i sandwiched to peices of .040 styrene that i cut in an arch and i angled the ends. the color is going to go as follows. duplicolor grey primer, 3 coats of linen white, wet sand, and then 3 coats of pure white. all duplicolor. there is still a little finish putty work to do on the hood. hopefully sunday it will be nice out and i can get some good pictures for you guys

well. i got the last coats of paint on this morning. tho i didn't realize it was as humid as it was. dang texas weather. so it is going to take forever to polish the whole thing. i got the back done, and the wing mounted. here is a teaser pic.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/10820machwing.JPG

after lookin at the hood, the opening needs a little more work. so it could be mid week before the whole body is done.

white97ex
10-02-2004, 01:42 AM
67 eleanor. is that a die-cast mach? if it is plastic, do you have any of the progress pics. the parts look so perfect, especailly the shaker

well, mine is going to be no where near that magnificently detailed. how did you do the shaker and all of the intake for it? also which wheels are those? EDIT: how did you do the mach 1 decal along the bottoms of the doors? do you still have a template for it if you made your own?

67eleanor
10-03-2004, 07:01 PM
the intake pars were moified from the 96 and 99 kits the mach 1 stripe is hand painted on
