The wheels are XS tuning. Those wheels seem pretty popular lately.

So, here is how I am making my cycle fenders.

The materials I am using are some rather hard wire, and some plastic sheet. I am using thin plastic to make it easier to bend. I am also using V-groove siding, to also facilitate bending.

1. Cut a strip of plastic just wider than the wheels. I made it about 1-2mm too wide, I can sand the excess off later. The strip I cut goes perpendicular to the grooves in the siding. That is important if you want it to bend easily later.

2. I maked off a length of the strip to use, rather larger than I want in the end, but not long enough to go around the entire wheel.

3. I wrap the strip around a rod of smaller diameter than the wheel. Not too small, though, or the plastic tends to kink. I used a Sharpie marker, since I had it out for marking already.

4. Test fit around the wheel. This one needs to go back to the marker.

5. I used the same plastic to help support the bent plastic, as it won't like to hold the shape on its own. I used the same plastic as I did for the fender itself. Trace the tire on the plastic.

5. Then I cut it out, and cut out the center. I didn't cut it fully a circle as the fender doesn't wrap a full circle around the wheel. This will make it easier to hold later.

8. (The pictures are out of order.) I taped the fender to the tire to hold it round while I....

7. ....placed the support section on top of the wheel, with a strip of plastic as a spacer. The support is then glued in place.

9. Cut the fender to size, shape it with sandpaper, and trim any excess. I drilled holes in the fender, and in the brake rotor to place wire in for the supports. After paint, I will epoxy it together.

Next up: put some shape to the top of the fenders to add a little visual interest, and putty and gaps and flaws. Almost done.

Man this is great, I am sorry I didn't see it before (I am one blind full). It looks amazing, real killer, I would love to have that one in 1:1, just to think how it would go, it could even eat some bikes (well not some but most of them). Beautifull!

Kinda cobbled some stuff together over the past few days. Took advantage of the labor day holiday to cut the orange peel down and respray. This coat took and will need an easy polish. I likely won't clear it - so it has that cool painted but not polished club racer look. I also did the dash, integrating the S2000 instrument cluster into it (Can't really tell in the pics. They suck this time, I'm kinda tired.) and I did the clutch/brake pedal/reservoir assembly. I used some flocking to simulate the fluid sock thingies that absorb overflowing fluids and keep the track clean. I am mildly pleased with results. Anyway, enjoy the dark pics. No real point in the update except that I want to cry. School is eating me alive. Three day weekend and that's all I got accomplished...

kinda reminds me of a 1930 ish open car desert racer....like an old maserati (SP) or bugatti...but then again it is a Lotus 7...

You can kinda see the flocking there. It's a little out of scale in my opinion, my number one reason I don't like flocking. I thought it might work here, but it didn't work as well as I would have liked. They're blue, though, like the Spoon ones. Wee!

I had planned to paint the wheels with Testor's Magnezium buffing metalizer, like Veyron did on his super clean Fiat, because that's just a gorgeous color for rims, but I haven't found any of that paint around. My hobby shop used to sell it but not anymore. Yellow, though, doesn't sound bad at all... kinda give it that F1 flare, eh? The header is Alclad Chrome - that stuff rocks! So simple, I can almost use it!

Paint looks much better. Good job so far? Oh, I think your hood has a mosquito bite.

That S2000 dash is just too cool willimo. Keep up the good work!

Nicer and nicer, Yellow wheels also remind me of one great Italian ride :) , but I am sure you will chose the right one since you made this dream come true. Keep it up.

willimo this is an awesome project..i've skipped this thread over and I don't know why...this is my style of car..sort of hot rod ish, sort of road racerish. I've been in planning stages of a similar build using the amt ala-kart kit with new suspension and a modern turbo 4 banger. I really like the hood bulge...it sets off the way the car looks. It gives it a nice 60's fighter jet look to the nose, very aggressive. Keep up the fine work man.

The hurricane, the one that hasn't even rained a drop on me, scared LSU into shutting down for today and tomorrow (as long as they don't screw with football this weekend....) so I've had the opportunity to do some work on my Lotus and on another project sure to knock ya'll's socks off.

Anywho, the Lotus is coming together, it seems. The hood doesn't fit quite right, but I couldn't find any positive locators for the front of the cowl. I blame that part. The motor, the battery... well everything there except the wheels has been attached. I still need to build the brakes and paint the wheels before it can "roll." What's left? Brakes, wheels, roll bar, decals, and sundry wiring and plumbing. Hopefully I can get most of it done tomorrow. Hooray!

I have a couple queries though - vintage wood steering wheel, or modern wheel? And I kinda dig the front without the cycle fenders... yay or nay? And should I leave the fenders black or cover them in CF? I think CF would tie the modern in really well. We'll see. Thanks for looking, comments and advice encouraged!

I'd say go with a wood steering wheel(Moto-Lita style), but it might not complement the s2k dash.
How'd you make the yellow-top Optima style battery? It looks spot on!
I like it with the fenders on black/body color.
Maybe the wheels painted off-white would work? Kinda like a BRG Mini Cooper S with a white top/wheels...I could be lame on that though :iceslolan

Excellent work on the engine will ! I like the idea of the wooden wheel, and i'd say go with the fenders, or the driver would hate you on a wet track !

The engine is wow, like everything else. I would go with modern wooden steering wheel (something like Alfa 156), fenders must be there but I like the CF idea, anyway how ever you make it I will love it :)

I say use less modern equipment. The vintage steering wheel and black cycle fenders will add to the 'sleeper' look this car has when the hood is in place.

Some magnesium wheels would look killer with the interior colors. :wink:

Steering wheel - I say good compromise between both. Something like a modern Nardi with wood ring but modern inset. I know the Initital D SilEighty has the exact optional steering wheel I have in mind. Of course, the wood would have to be SM or something.

Fenders - I like it either way. I like the fenders if driving through wet pavement. :)

Haven't said anything till now, and the reason is, I'd have run out of adjectives to describe how great this car is. I think I remember you posting something in the main forum about it, and I suggested a Supercharged V8. The car is excellent, I love every little detail you've done to this, everything from the aluminum velocity stacks to the optima battery (how'd you do it?) it all looks great. The green, well, its growing on me, the fenders are kick ass, the wheels, leave em white! I really love it all, now if we could just get a supercharged 454 in there... lol! Great build Will, keep it up, and lets see some more civics, maybe one with the, ah hem, f20 ?

I would loose the fenders myself... I think without them it gives the car a more sporty open wheel racer kinda look. But then again it is tough to make that decision without seeing the car with them.
