Soo...i resized the pictures, got them all set to go...its a mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8. anyways....i completly built the engine bay, as you can see from the pictures, i moved the engine alittle to the right, and raised it about an eighth of an inch, added the intake/turbo manifold, exhaust header with external dump valve...i even added a GReddy BOV for good measure.....umm....im sure you can see the turbo with the intake and filter. from the opening in the hood, the dump valve sits through the opening and pops out a bit over the hood, and you can also see the filter, giving the car a really mean look. also from the pictures you can see the beginning stages of fabricating my hood scoop, im mostly working on the exterior right now. plans right now include:

- roll cage
- a harness bar (i havent seen this done...so i figured i would step the game up alittle for the contest)
- lambo doors
- new sub housing for the trunk
- OEM style Evo 8 wing

thats it for right now....ill get more ideas as i come up with em. i am fabricating the roll cage/harness bar/lambo hinges out of some steel tubes i bought at the hobby store. so...more pictures soon!

Nice! How did you make the air filter?

It's the turbo and filter from a Muscle Machine RSX, but it's not plumbed is it?

the intake and turbo are hooked up to the turbo/intake manifold, and i am working on intercooler plumbing right now. so its set to run w/o the intercooler right now, but it will be done tomorrow.

thanks for the comments guys :D keep em commin.

Should just run piping from the intercooler to the intake manifold on the cold side, then the hot side gets the the turbo treatment.

well if you look at the picture, you can see the intercooler plumbing comming up around the left side of the engine. i am planning on running it out to the left side of the intake manifold...i am trying to figure out how i can route it to the left side of the intake manifold AROUND where the hood hinges are gunna be. i could shave the hinges off and just set the hood on there for pictures and stuff....but i would like to retain the working funtion of the hood. do you have any suggestions on how to get it around the hood hinges w/o going over the engine? but i am also getting a bit confused...i need some more reference photos of the engine bay of an evo 8 which is what i am going to search for in a little bit. because in my haste, i brainfarted and forgot how to plumb the intercooler.

today i also used some model plaster to shave the holes where the posts for the wing went, and also put a big glob of it over the mold for my hood scoop. so when i get home (at my girlfriends house now...then heading to her doctor appointment) i can shave the plaster into the hood scoop with my dremel. pictures later as well.

side view
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/punkerjon/evo7.jpg

as you can see it still needs alittle bit of detail work, but i figured i would post some progress so you could see how it was comming along. i think the scoop really flows with the body at this point, because it has an aggressive WBK/bumpers on it, as well as a mean lookin engine and rims. and with the WBK, the scoop flows with the lines of the kit. as you can see, i also started to clean up the body a bit so that the paint can stick better. anyways....comment as nessasary :D

you mean on that center picture where the lip looks off to the side? the reason it looks like that is because the picture wasnt taken dead center.

For the intercooler, just take the turbo and filter off the intake manifold, then run the pipe thats on the left from the manifold to the intercooler, and put the turbo on the left, would be alot easier to plumb from the headers that way.

oi_boy
09-02-2004, 02:18 AM
help me out with what you mean because im a little confused :D

so take the pipe that is to the left of the motor (my current plumbing), and switch it spots with the turbo and just plumb it from there? i wanted to keep the turbo on the right for authenticity. im looking at pictures for intercooler plumbing right now, but i cant seem to find a good picture of an engine bay.

heres some more progress pics...i scrapped the roof scoop i had. i thought it looked good, but i figured for a rally inspired car it should have a rally inspired scoop :D. i made the outline for the scoop out of the metal peice from a flobby disc, cut and molded to my liking. i am going to mold it out of plaster later on tonight, so well see how this goes. i got the idea from the STi you can see in the backround of the first picture, the candy red car :D

i dont think you can see it very well, but the outline is on the roof...you can also see the civic i had bought and scrapped for parts the other day :D

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/punkerjon/evo11.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/punkerjon/evo12.jpg

also..i started the OEM style EVO 8 wing.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/punkerjon/evo13.jpg

i had made the outline for the wing out of a solid peice of aluminum i picked up for 70 cents at the hobby store. the flash really reflected off the plaster.....most of that white stuff is plaster but its not really as much as it looks. i covered the strip inbetween the posts in plaster so that i could shave it down so the strip will blend in with the trunk.

EDIT: dont get on me PETET about that last picture by saying that the posts are not lined up right...hahaha I TOOK THE PIC OFF CENTER AGAIN! i tripple-checked the wing before i glued it and covered it in plaster.

Here's a shot of my evo engine bay, it's got the plumbing like I mentioned, and I'm currently working on a "How to Turbocharge an Engine" tutorial, so if you wanna wait for that, it'd apply directly to your project :D

but the intercooler plumbing shouldnt be going directly to the manifold should it? shouldnt it be supplying the cool air to the turbo and then the turbo should plumb to the manifold? the plumbing should go to where my filter is placed now, meaning if i want the filter there i would need to Y the filter off of the intercooler hose?

ElRxBandito
09-02-2004, 07:31 PM
The purpose of an intercooler is to cool the air coming from the turbo because the air that goes through it is heated by the exhaust that's spinning the turbo, then it goes through the intercooler to the intake manifold.

Here's a link to my tutorial, It should pretty much apply directly to your project.

update:

well i shaved the hood scoop, and scrapped my wing. i am using the same style wing but using a new strategy in making it. i am also going to be out another 40-50 bucks because i ignored the obvious when i was plumbing my intercooler. i chopped some parts i realised i didnt need to. so....i am going out to buy another muscle machines RSX and Hot Wheels honda civic for parts tomorrow. i really dont want to....but they have the parts i want, plus the RSX will have some parts i might want to use/incorporate into my Evo. so if anyone happens to have a Hot Wheels 1:18 civic exhaust header PLEASE, PLEAAASE let me know. i would like to try and save some money because the exhaust header is the only thing i need out of the civic....waste of 20 bucks.

ElRxBandito
09-03-2004, 01:52 AM
Why would you need the Civic Headers? The thing on it is just a crappy version of a turbo, use the one you have to make turbo headers, look at my tutorial, it'll show you how to turbo it.

oi_boy
09-03-2004, 11:49 AM
the civic exhaust header was what i had origionally used, and it was a turbo exhaust manifold. the intake manifold however, wasnt. im going to try and salvage my parts so...eh. well see what i need in the long run.

well! i thought i would share a bit of good news. i had a really bad day at work today.....tons of work to do. it didnt help that i was super tired. sooo....on my way home i stoped by toys r us, to look at prices for another MM RSX, and to look at some other jadas they had there. and JUST MY LUCK! this just made my day better. what do i see but an open TEIN Evo 8....1:18 scale too! soo i sniped the wing off that one. so now i have the wing i want! hoRRAY! anyways.....found a new turbo/intake, and a few extra goodies i pulled out of the MM that i actually bought...i even tore the box a bit so i could get a discount. I KNOW I KNOW, dont follow my example, but i was desparate and low on cash. soo...anyways. off to work on the project i go. pics later.

UPDATE:

so...i didnt take any pictures of the new wing i got, but ill take some later. these are pictures of the newly re-worked engine bay. set the turbo up so it could run with the intercooler. for the intercooler plumbing going into the turbine, i Y'ed the intercooler tubing onto the intake tubing so it can suck in air from the engine bay, as well as from the intercooler. i will rig up a by-pass valve later, which shouldnt be hard to do so that the air going to the turbo will only be brought in from one source instead of both. i also took off a driveshaft with rear axle/tranny box from an MM skyline i had scrapped some months back. i am really going all out on this one...i am going to chop and shave the jada's chassis a lot, and transplant MM suspension components to the Evo...providing working suspension. anywho...onto the pictures. p.s. the filter looks like crap because i got it off a new MM RSX i had bought, and its super shiny right now. but its the same filter/turbo set up as in previous pictures so you get the idea.

the new engine set up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/punkerjon/evo14.jpg

I also added an o2 sensor if you didnt notice. and FLYSKYLINE, i might need to write another tut on how to turbo an engine, i found many shortcuts as well as setting it up for correct turbo placement :D. theres always more than one way to do things :D. progress is comming along quite well and quite smoothly if i dont say so myself.

It's nice and all, but I dont really see a need to construct an armature for that roof scoop. I mean come on, the thing is like 3/4"X1/2". Throughtout this forums, i've noticed that most guys tend to make their modding methods harder then they should be. I'd reccomend you use some industrial styling clay to make any desired shape. You can perfectly scuplt widebodies, bodykits, w/e without all the stress. I'll try to post some pics of custom diecast bodies i've done in the past using industrial clay, and from what i've seen around here, i know you'd be impressed.

oi_boy
09-05-2004, 03:37 PM
that scoop that i made the armature for was scrapped. it didnt look good, and i hate making those out of paperclips. on the new one i made, i simply bent a peice of that metal off a floppy disk to mock it up and see how it looked, then used plaster to shape it and then shave it.

i hate using clay. ive tried all kinds of clay too, including styling clay. i tried that when i was a newbie to modding. it sucks. it doesnt work. now i use bondo and/or cement plaster (get it at a hobby store). That way you can shape things to EXACT specifications, and can do more with that than you could out of clay. use a dremel to shave it. works
much better.

Lol, exactly what kind of clay did you try?
The clay i'm talking about is Y2Klay or cm-50/cm-70. All major car companies use it to create their concept vehicles. And what technique did you use?

alright for all you guys sick of my progress shots, heres a mock-up of what the final product will look like from the outside, with some minor changes. its a very simple black on black color scheme, with a carbon hood/trunk/wing. The color I chose for the exterior is a TesTors Metallic Black, and the wheels were painted a gloss black. interior was transplanted from another Jada Evo, because it will off-set the dark exterior. Its a black/grey interior with green and red highlights.

in that last pic you can see my moms car, and my car (the yellow one) and you can even see my cat chillin on the window sill. haha. anyways. THIS IS NOT THE FINAL PROJECT! it is not done yet. I need to clear-coat it with MANY coats of an Ultra-Gloss i picked up for just this project.
