Did you figure anything out about this? I'm thinking about doing the same thing with my car.

Just an update. I found a local shop that said if I get them the console, they would hook it up for $50. So now I am just in the hunt for a console. Any ideas where to find one?

Good Deal. Have you tried a local junkyard? I'm sure theres a few Impala's in there now... Otherwise you'd have to order it through GM... Nothing is cheap through them :(

Well, I found a junk yard that happened to have 3 impalas and all of them had the overhead consoles in them. I bought one for $25. It was the wrong color so I bought some paint. I painted it yesterday and it looks pretty nice. Now I just need to get it hooked up.

Thats good to know, what did you use to paint it? I've been fiending to change nearly all of the interior in mine... just out of wear and tear.

I went to a local automotive paint store and had them match up the color and then I used my spray gun to spray paint it.

I am pretty sure I lack the tools for doing much of it myself, to top it off I need a new headliner, police cars have craploads of holes... I'd pull it off if I knew it wouldn't look horrible.

So did anyone here ever figure this out? I think the shop that quoted me $50 figured they would quote me and I would never go through with finding and buying a DIC console. I bought one and then brought it back to them to install it and their confidence level went from "sure we can install it if you get us one" to "let me research if it's possible" and that's been a few weeks now of them researching. Really I don't care if I get an overhead console as much as I just want a way of telling my fuel MPG easier than writing down my mileage and dividing by how much it takes to fill up my tank. I want that to be computerized. So is there any after market solutions to do this stuff?

Is there preexisting wires up there that would just plug right into the console thing???? I noticed on the 2000 base impala, the plug for the fog lights is down there zip tied to the headlight harness. So I would assume so...don't those have compasses and temp gauge and stuff like that in it???

I have done this to my impala and the plug is in the back trunk lid but you need to go back to the junkyard and get the wire harness that runs clear back to the plug and take it too.

Let me know if you guys need any help adding any mods I have done plenty to my impala it was a base model when i got it now you cant tell unless you open the hood from an LS.

That seems like an odd place to plug in at. It would seem to me that it would plug in somewhere under the dash (but that's a total guess.) Where exactly is the plug at? Is it in the trunk somewhere behind one of the walls or under the floor area of the trunk or behind the back seat? Does it have all the functionality as if the car originally came with the Display information console or are there features that don't work correctly or not at all? I think the big one I want is the info for fuel economy such as miles per gallon. I think this should also display some problems the car is having, right? Plus what other "mods" have you done?

It is under the back lid by the speakers on the passenger side.
It is a feature that is allready on the car just not installed the plug for the temp sensor is in the front grill the sensor you can get at the junkyard but you can get any gm with temp guage in it like s10 blazer
If you need to call me on this info i will be glad to help I also own a window tinting & accessories shop (740) 826-0145 OHIO.

Has anyone else ever found this connector under the back lid? I looked and there is nothing under my back lid. Just the bottom of the speakers and the amp for the factory stereo. Extremetint2, I'll try to get time to call you someday to see if you ever found it.

Ok, after many times of me lying down in my trunk and coming up empty handed, I looked again today and think I found something. It's a wire than runs from a really small box and the other side of the wire has a square connector and it isn't hooked to anything. I think that's the wire for the overhead console. Am I correct? Does anyone know where I can get the wiring to hook this up now? I'm going to try a junk yard but I don't think they are going to be wanting me ripping apart the whole car to get the wire that goes from the trunk to the front of the car out of it.

Maybe you already have the overhead console harness in the car. Seems that everything that didnt come on my car, since it was a base model, has a harness. I found a cd changer harness, sunroof harness, and a fog light harness. I'm sure there are more harness' i have no clue about and maybe theres a overhead console harness under the headliner?

Would anyone know how to find out if the wire is up there? If I knew 100% for sure what connector it was in the trunk, if it is already hooked up to something, then the wire for sure is up there. Is there any other ways to find out other than cutting a hole in the ceiling just to find out there isn't one.

Ok, I went to the junk yard today and looked at an Impala that was ripped apart. I saw a wire that ran from the console area in the roof to the rear passenger side of the car and it was connected right next to the speaker. But there is no way that I can get at that wire in my car without finding a way to take apart the whole rear deck area. I layed down in the trunk of my car and cannot see the same connector in my car. The one I found earlier in my car is about 1 inch by 1 inch square connector and it wasn't hooked to anything. This one I saw on an impala in the junk yard is a much wider connector. There was no way I was going to be able to pull the whole wiring harness out of the car in the junk yard though. It went right down the center of the ceiling. I would had destroyed the car in the junk yard to get it out. (I actually tried for a few minutes but started damaging the ceiling quite a bit and lost my guts to destroy the car more trying to get the wiring out.) I then cut off the end of the wiring harness near the rear deck area in hopes of being able to just patch in the wire in the center of the harness. I also grabbed the plastic piece that goes above the console that it snaps into. But I just need to figure out how to get at that plug in the rear deck area first. I want to first get at it, then I'll patch together the wiring for the console. Then before I start hacking into my car and cutting a big hole in the top of the ceiling, I'm going to just hook it up and see if it works. If it works, then I'll start hacking my car up and running so it's nice looking.

Ok, here's an update. I went to a junk yard and cut off some of the wiring harness (like I said in my last post). Today I climbed back in my trunk and looked some more and found a wire harness by the speaker. It looks identical to the harness that I cut off the car in the junk yard. Both sides have a wire to it so it's already running into the car somewhere which leads me to believe that the wire is already ran to the front of the car where the console goes. I just wish I had a way to know 150% for sure that the wire is in the overhead console area before I cut a hole and find out that I was wrong and it's not there. I just don't know what I'll do if I cut the hole and it isn't there. But the wire is already hooked up in the trunk so I don't know what else to think. It only makes sense if I cut the hole that it will be there. Any ideas what I can do with that spot of the car if I do cut the hole and the wire isn't there and I can't find anything to make it work? Or does anyone know of a way to somehow look through the carpetting without cutting a hole? Maybe something that detected wires??? Or an x-ray type of device that could see through there. Maybe I could rent something like that and I could see through the ceiling for a wire harness.
Or I'm thinking possibly about cutting a hole in front of the ceiling close to the windshield so if the wire isn't there, then it won't be that noticable. And then I can find something to plug it up.

Now I have a question for everyone. I went to the dealer yesterday and asked them about this. They weren't 100% sure if it was up there or not. They said they are going to pull some schematics and check. But they said to be 100% for sure, I need to pull the headliner back and just see if the wire hareness is there. How do I pull the wire harness back without distroying the head liner?

I took my headliner down expecting to see the wires but they weren't there. But I am really close to figuring it out. Actually I didn't figure it out, but I found a website that tells exactly how to do it. Here's the link.

I'm going to buy the console wire from that guy and just have him send it to me rather than me splicing wires or trying to make the cable myself.

If i can find a center console, i have a empty case there it looks like the same size as the center constole but just empty inside, do i need to buy a mounting bracket if this is already there, its like alittle storage

Well, I got mine working from the instructions of bbengineer. It looks and works like it was installed by the factory. All you need is the console and the piece of plastic that snaps inside of the console that holds it to the top of the roof.

Where can i get a console i called my junk yards they dont have any 00-05 impalas.... i live in a small area, Is this something i am going to want someone to do or is it easy enough for me to do, how many wires do i have to look for ?

If you can't find one in a junk yard anywhere around you, then check ebay. I see a few on there every once in a while. The wiring part of it is pretty easy. There is a wire in your trunk by your rear passenger speaker that you disconnect them and then you insert the wire that you build or buy from bbengineer between those two wires in the trunk. Then you just bring the wire up through the headliner up to the front of the car where the overhead console goes. This part is where I screwed up though. I cut the hole in my overhead area wrong and off centered and too far towards the window. So I ended up taking my car into a guy that had to reheadline my whole inside of the car to fix my mistake. (He only charged me $100.00 to do it and it looks as good as factory now.) I had to install a temp sensor into a pigtail wire that was already installed by the factory. It is in front of the radiator on the passenger side. That got the temp working. The electrical part of the install is easy. If I had to do it again, I would have taken it in to have someone that knew what they were doing to cut the hole for me and install it though. Maybe that kind of stuff is your thing though and cutting the hole will be no big deal. But really, if I had to do it again, I probably would have never have done it in the first place. All it tells you is your miles per gallon, gives you a temp readout and the compass. You can put in a mirror with the temp and compass for a lot less hassle and risk that you'll mess up your headliner.

Hi I'm trying to install the overhead console as well into a base model 2003 impala. What does the wire you put between the 2 wires on the trunk look like and what does it do? The bbengineering site link doesn't work anymore.
