I just have a quick question, I wanna get a spoiler for my 1995 Z28. I want to get the APR Aluminum Wing that comes on the Supra from the first Fast and Furious. But i want it to be functional, i have been reading about it and it claims to be functional, but will it work on my car? And when i install it so i remove the stock spoiler and bolt it onto the truck? Or on to the stock spoiler? Because i would need a third brake light so i dont get pulled over. I just want something original, unique, and something that will stand out fromt eh rest and get my car noticed. Thanks, I also am getting the car prepped for autocross racing and need it to be function for that as well. I also am doing the front end convesion, most likely the black housing halo headlights, xenon front, and ultra Z hood, and if you know anyone that makes fenders that are wider than the stock ones please let me know, Thanks.

i don't think that thing will be functional at all. those large ducktails (i think thats what they call them) are the only spoilers that do anything on a camaro. i have also seen those heavy duty spoilers for a corvette that attach to the frame... maybe they make them for camaros, but it will take a lot of fabrication.
...your probably going to get a lot of shit in the camaro forum with a thread about spoilers :)

Spoilers only really work at very high speeds. They are pretty much just got looks on a street car.

Theres a guy from our local camaro club here that has a big spoiler on the back and like new cavalier side ground effects, and a celica rear bumper, and a prelude front end, all aftermarket stuff.
Big spoilers dont just go on imports.

Big spoilers dont just go on imports.
You are absolutely correct! No, they don't. There are a couple Domestic cars here in town that look outright aweful with huge spoilers! Big spoilers only look good on a select few cars.
If a big adjustable spoiler is required for Functionability, is the car really a street car? The only cars I have seen that actually regularly see the high speeds required for one of those Big spoilers are race cars that are on open road races or big tracks such as road atlanta or something like that. A factory Spoiler such as an SS spoiler works perfect and provides plenty of DF for speeds well over 100 MPH, IMO. if you are doing the whole Auto-X in a parking lot with cones there is no need for one of those big spoilers.
One example: A friend of mine haad a CRX honda with a big turbo and stuff. He had a big wing on it (not a big aluminum adjustable, but a big fiberglass hi rise one) and went to the local 1/8 mile dragstrip. He made a Pass, then removed the spoiler and made another pass. HE PICKED UP LIKE 3 TENTHS AND 4 MPH (somEthing like that) JUST BY REMOVING THE SPOILER! in other words, the spoiler was creating way too much down force to do the car any good at the slow speeds (He was trapping like 80MPH).
Point is- Unless you are running your car at a road course, chances are the big spoiler will slow you down.

please.. please dont! It would be another camaro ruined.. (IMO)
But seriously, Those spoilers are not functional.. As deadcarny stated, your car will probably never see a consistant speed required for a spoiler like that..Its just going to slow you down.. I love the look of the factory SS or RS spoiler, and being from factory and designed for the car, you know they'l do their job...

check out www.lgmotorsports.com, i think they have an autocross spoiler for the camaro. as for the rest of you guys. try watching an ALMS or SCCA race. they all have spoilers and they all work. the only reason why its stupid for the ricer guys to have spoilers is cause going down the road at 45 mph to work is not gonna make a huge spoiler that doesnt match the car work...

bottom line, if you have a big "functional" spoiler on your car, and only exceed 120mph 5% of the time, your a poser, have a nice day.

in test runs the Audi TT was flipping over on the Autobahn at really high speeds because of its shape, so they had to put that spoiler on it and it solved the whole problem

yeah, but like a couple of us posted above, those are HIGH SPEEDS! a normal street car here in the US do not regularly see those speeds.

that was exactly my point. it was in response to the guys that said spoilers were pointless and that they did nothing. the guy said he was setting his maro up for road-racing so a gave a road-racing example...

um, i thought autocross was the road course on a big parking lot with orange cones, i would be EXTREAMLY impressed if he reached speeds worthy of a functional rear spoiler on one of those courses.

Me personally. I don't like them. Unless I need one I wont get it. I highly doubt that I'll need one any way. I'd only put a Type R Spoiler on a DC5(Honda Integra/Acura RSX)

Lol, the spoiler in my sig, was specifically designed for the car the rest of the panels.. it serves a purpose because this is a car that normally would see those speeds.. if you don't go that fast.. stick to stock.. Not that i do, but that wing is stock.. haha

lol, my friend that had the 2.3-16 messed up his engine.. it was going to cost him 6500 for a new one... not including the cosworth head. So I have another body for the car.. as long as the engine isn't fucked. Although, it would look like a regular 2.3-16, no aero stuff, and a way smaller spoiler.

89IROC&RS
08-22-2004, 03:55 AM
lol, so basicly youd have the same car, minus all the stuff that makes it special ;)
gtkriss
08-22-2004, 04:04 AM
Nope.. the engine itself is special.. his engine(if it worked) made about 173 hp. and 225ftlb. Mine makes 235hp and 230ftlb. Remember this is a 4 banger, with no s/c, turbo, just the engine.. The body aerodynamics makes it special because it's such a heavy car, and it's a sedan that haul's ass. 0-60 in 6.7. But all of them are special, made with cosworth heads... but only 2,000 per year, for 5 years were made. The EVO had 502 made.

um, actually bro, it depends on what model 69 camaro youre talking about. yeah a sixer, maybe a base 327 or even a 350 maybe. but the Z28 would spank that merc, so would the ZL1, and several big block options. the big blocks (including the ZL1) may not take it on the road course, but they were purpose designed drag cars, so they werent meant to, the Z on the other hand, would give you a run for your money. and if you modified just the tires on the Z from back then, oh man, no contest you wouldnt ever see it again after the first turn. sorry man, i dont mean to hate on anyones ride, especially a cool person, but in my opinion, that car isnt NEARLY worth the ammount of money you seem to have paid for it, exept in rarity value, at the track, and on the street, im just not that impressed.

08-22-2004, 06:08 PM

Well i do want the spoiler mostly for looks but somewhat functional, if it is going to slow me down on races i dont wanna get it but i just want the look. I've seen a camaro Race car before online and it looked great with one if the spoilers i want, which is the APR aluminum wing that is adjustable by i think 35degrees. I just want to do something not everyone esle does so i dont have the normal Z28 everyone esle has, and we are doing stuff to the engine as well, most liekly an LT4 package or if we can find the right people a LT5, but mostly i want it for looks and speed. I am going to put some pics of my car on cardomain.com soon cuz i just scanned them. Now dont laugh but i did buy some altezza's but not the crome ones or anything all flashy, they are carbon fiber and they were the rarest ones i could fine and looked the best in my opinion.

08-23-2004, 06:43 PM
From what I have learned, being different is just going to get you pulled over more and stuff stolen more. I have a stock 83 cross fire z28. I bought my car for 3 grand, and have done nothing to it. I find way more satisfaction in beeting these little hondas that look like crap when they bought their car for 5 g's, have put just as much $ into 'em, and I still beet them. Raced a crx with v-tech and a 50 shot of nos, still beet him, on the freeway. My car only goes to 105, maybe 110 (speedo doesn't go that high). Put your money into the motor and suspension, for autocrossing you don't need a huge wing, you won't go that fast on an autocross. Unless you want to put a huge "ducktail" as it was called before like short track race cars use and put it at about 75degrees from your truck lid, no spoiler is going to help you. Go to your local circle track and ask the drivers what they think, they do this every sunday and get the most traction they can while never reaching much above 80mph for most of them. Don't use hondas and such for examples, they are front wheel drive and dont need spoilers anyways. If its just the look your going for, which I hope at this point it is cuz everyone has shown why it isn't practical for performance, go for it, but don't look for a lot of respect from other camaro owners, most of us think those are a disgrace to the car. BUT, do what you like, its your car, so make it yours.
