troubling noise

I've had my 96' saturn sc2 for about a year and for the past couple months it has made a fluctuating squealing noise that comes from right around the crankshaft pulley. Here's the thing - I've disconnected the belt and ran it without it and it STILL made the same noise. When I drive it and run more accessories on it the noise gets louder to a constant screaming. The place I took it to said that they think it's in the crank and would take a couple hundred dollars just to look at it because they would have to rip it apart. could it be the oil pump or fuel pump? one of those it located close to the crank i'm told. well if you have any ideas shoot - thanks!

the oil pump is connected to the crank, the fuel pump is in the tank. does the crank pulley "walk" back and forth? maybe the crank, but may also be the bearings, or the front seal. you really will need to drop the oil pan to solve this one.

I'm not sure what you mean by "walk" however when i look at the crank pulley through the wheel , the nut moves slightly back and forth if that's what you're referring to. I figured I would have to do some work for this one so what I'm going to do is take it to the dealer tommorrow and have them look at it in the morning. If they can tell me what's wrong I'd rather just fix it myself but I don't have the time nor experience with this thing to just go at it. so i'll get back w/ ya tommorrow afternoon. thanks for ur reply and if anyones has any ideas post

by "walk" i mean the whole pulley wobbles, it is a good sign of bad bearings(mainly the thrust bearing).

be warned taking off the oil pan is no small task on saturns, you will need to take off the downpipe, crank pulley, and loosen a motor mount. if you are going to do the work yourself, you will want to invest $20 in a Hanyes repair manual, available at most auto stores.

it was actually the intake hose offesetting the pressure in the crank case when the hose was blocked - the weirdest thing none the less the simplest to that was goog thanks for your help peace
