Ok, so I bought this 97 528i from Ebay. It has 109,000 miles and is in Miami. A few dents and such and of course, very worn and dry leather seats. Here is the link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2486200668

Ignore the listed winner. He had a negative feedback rating and the ad clearly states that anyone with negative should not bother to even bid. So, the broker emailed me the day after saying that it's mine if I still wanted it since the winner bid $100 more than me. I paid a total of $8500 and $150 for their "Transaction Fee". Dont care about the fee. According to kbb.com, and my insurance/finance company (USAA), it's an EXCELLENT deal.

View the pics if you will (especially the link with the 76 pictures) and let me know your opinion. The check goes to them Fedex tomorrow, I fly to Miami to drive it back to Pasadena, CA next month.

Hi "jarhed":

It looks like you did good! Now some people swear by eBay, but I never had any luck with
them, :banghead:

But ... anyway I went to Kelly Blue Book and ran a report based on info you gave, and for a 97 528i Bimmer in excellent condition with 109,000 miles Kelley Blue book says your BMW is
worth: $11, 925.00! :grinno:

When you pick it and get it back home, be sure to let us here at the BMW forum know how it looks and runs! (Also be sure to try to get a set of documented service records? scheduled: oil changes, brake pads, etc., some people call me a "Doubting Thomas" when it comes to new and especially ALL used cars, ((including BMW's)), and thats ok).

Personally if an owner cannot or will not provide me with records of their precious vehicle, I would be very cautious in purchasing it, also you might want to run CarFax, (19.95), CarFax is a large DataBase that will tell you almost everything of where that 528i been i.e. if it had been involved in any MVA's (car accidents), mileage checks, etc.)

In conclusion: I wish you the best!

Sincerely,

Presley348 :smokin:

PS,
The pics I saw looked nice, but pay close attention to its interior, especially the dash...look for sun cracks, sun fading, etc...had it been garaged or covered up with a car cover? (Be wise to Bimmer owners who try to convince one for it has not been driven very much in the city, but mainly driven on the highway by a "Little old lady to and from church on Sundays who lives in Pasadena!" LOL Just kidding)

Good idea! I never thought about Carfax. Guess I should have done that first. I'm going to run it now. I've always ran carfax on all my cars, not sure why I didnt do it this time. My 92 735iL was clean on Carfax when I bought it last October.

I know the leather on the drivers seat and the rear passenger side seat is dried and cracked. I'm going to try an old trick on it to see if I can at least soften it a little, then treat it heavily with Lexol (I swear by that stuff!!).

This deal is from an Auto Broker that has started wholesaling cars on Ebay. As the lady in their accounting office told me, "we are just trying to make a quick buck, plain and simple. Dont want to spend time and money trying to retail cars, we turn them over quicker wholesale to dealers and individuals". They seem pretty nice and Michael Zimmerman told me that they do have mechanics go over every car that they bring into their warehouse. Still, I'm going to get a synthetic oil change as soon as I get there and check the tires (the pictures show the tires with plenty of meat, but we'll see). After all, I am driving over 2700 miles back to the west coast in it. I'd hate to break down in middleofnowhere Louisiana or Vider Texas. ;-)

Hi jarhed:

I know you don't speed, but seriously you might want to carry along the new Escort Passport x50 (With new "POP" mode) radar detector, for you long trip back to California,
for some over aggressive police who tend to watch out for Bimmer drivers $$$, if radar/laser detectors are legal in the state you will be driving in, (but you might want to first check with Escort because they have a list of the states that allow their product at: http://www.escortinc.com/ (http://www.escortinc.com/)),

Have a safe and fun trip!

Nah, I dont speed! (cough!! cough!!) But I've already been checking Ebay for detectors. Just wasnt sure which one to get. So, I'll assume the Escort Passport should cover me all the way across the country?

Wow!!!

The drive from Miami to Pasadena, CA was absolutely wonderful! I highly recommend everyone take a road trip and view this beautiful country of ours from the highway! Just cant see it properly flying from city to city.

They picked me up at the airport and had changed the oil to full synthetic at my request (no charge). But they didnt know how to reset the oil service light. Drive went well (except for the evacuation traffic going up 95 from Miami to Jacksonville). The car performed PERFECTLY with the exception of the automatic AC setting. It shuts off the fan after a while and only comes back on when you shut down the car and restart. No problem, I just set it on manual fan and all is good.

The tires are almost all different, the right front started feathering by the time I got to Tucson. No biggie, I'll put some tires on it. The dent and ding in the left passenger door was estimated today at $525 to fix. There is a hose in the engine compartment that is all but torn from the connection. My garage says it's a "modulator". I think he's bull****** cause I've never heard of that and I know he wants the business. I'll fix it myself, thanks. I'll also tighten up the loose front end.

The leather is a mess, especially the drivers seat and the rear seat bottom. If I can manage to find a wrecked one, I'll grab the rear seat bottom from it. Anyone with a lead, please email me. Of course, the windshield wipers were a mess as I figured out when I hit a huge rainstorm in Biloxi Mississippi. Of course, Pep Boys doesnt have 24" replacements.

Overall, I'm VERY happy with this purchase and recommend Zimmerman Auto Brokers in Miami to ANYone looking for a used car at wholesale.
