Here is this week's update, not a great deal to report as usual. Just made some engine and suspension mounts at the rear and the deep frames for inside the side windows. They're not that accurate but will fill things out hopefully.

Just one more time for understanding, what you´re doing: Are you making all of those white parts yourself? If so, you gotta be joking, when you say that you didn´t make too much progress!
RallyRaider
04-09-2005, 05:35 AM
Some of the white parts are from the HRM resin engine kit, but asside form that, yeah quite a bit of styrene work.

Hinged the back end. All I need to do now is rescribe the door handles, build up the inner structure of the engine cover and fix up a few intakes, then I'll finally be ready to start painting...

Back into things this weekend. :) Mainly working on the inside of the engine cover, one of the trickiest things I've ever done on a model! Basically I wanted the entire rear structure to be one part that can be painted separately then dropped in. As is stands now the structure clips in and holds its position without glue. Still lots of gaps to fill and I need to figure out a way of building the ducts from the side intakes to the rear brakes.
Making everything fit resulted in some compromises compared to the real car, but GT40s were dynamic race cars changing spec all the time - so that will be my excuse. :icon16:

Thanks guys. I should've got motivated a lot earlier to meet the deadline, left it a bit late now. Anyway I'm one of the judges so not eligible for the main categories.
SF - the hinge is made from a brass tube with a smaller brass rod inserted through the middle. The tube is super glued inside the rear lip of the cover. The ends of the rod fit into two more small tubes on the back of the chassis. I've had to cut up and modify things to make it work. In general I'm not following Fujimi's instructions much building this thing!

Body work is now primed. :) Still a few rough edges to clean up. In this pic you can just see the rescribed door handles as well as the extensions on the three NACA ducts on the nose. Also the panel lines were scribed deeper and the window/light surrounds sharpened up. I was a bit worried how the full width radiator exit would look but it came out fine. Next some white primer followed by Tamiya Chrome Yellow.

Here is another pic, this time of the front end coming together. In order to get this model finished in time I'm going to have live with a few things that turned out less than ideal and forget about a some detailing ideas I intended to incorporate. Will have to save them for the next one. :) Next thing on the adgenda are the decals.

No. They're made from wire wraped around styrene rod, then covered with BMF and painted. I gave them coat of smoke that left a glossy finish that I don't like, normally I'd finish with a flat coat but I'm in a hurry. :)

There is some amazing building going on in your workshop! You know you can add some flat base to the smoke and cut a corner or two if you wan't a flat apperance of the final product? I'm sure you know about that, You just forgot in the heat!
Again, nice build of a good looking car. I'm looking forward to see the car when it's ready, the only drawback then is that I can't look forward to anohter update :disappoin Well, I guess in time there will be more to follow from your little workshop and I'll have to keep glueing back my jaws! Damn AF and all amazing build, I'm getting a hard time eating any solid foods these days :grinyes:
Best regards!

Thanks Niclas, I actually have a jar of smoke enamel that has flat base already added but chose to ignore it! :screwy: I was just in a hurry to get it all assembled and the regular glossy acrylic was closer so... I might try and brush paint some flat clear on later. I'm not really doing this thing justice - I just hand painted the windscreen surround.

I'm actually a judge Straight six, so can't enter the two main categories. Besides have you seen some of the other entries?! Some absolutely stunning stuff happening, this may not even be the best GT40 in the comp! :)
Anyway the decals are now on, I'm kicking myself because I slightly misaligned the number decal on the nose - not enough time to fix it (great having an excuse like that! :)). The colour just keeps getting lighter and lighter too, what initially looked like a fairly orangish shade now looks stark yellow with the decals and trim painted.

Dangerous to start figuring out how much things cost!
For starters we have the Fujimi kit itself, HRM regin engine, S27 PE set, Speedline decals. Then there is a bunch of other bits and pieces like seatbelt hardware, connectors, rivets, styrene sheet and rod, BMF, mesh hose, the list goes on...

You really put it into high gear, didn't you? To say it's impressive is to say nothing at all, the model leaves me speechless, and it's not even finished yet. I presume you've already clearcoated and polished it?

Thanks guys! Barring disasters this coming together quite quickly now...
Alex - No, one of many corners I've cut is skipping the clear coat. Not really that necessary because the decals are all solid blocks. Means there isn't any carrier film to hide as I was able to cut it all off before applying the decals. Cars of this era weren't usually finished in a high gloss anyway, the model is probably too shiny already!
The part I'm dreading is soon aproaching. Namely fitting the body to the chassis with the interior door trim and windows all requiring a very precise fit.

Took some quick snaps of the almost finished body and chassis before they are mated together. Kind of a shame to cover up the chassis with all it's detail. It was raining when I took these pictures, which explains the water droplets on the rear window.
