Smoke from steering wheel

I have a 2000 LS1 with about 115000 miles. My wife reported some smoke coming from the steering wheel column and the smell of burnt plastic. I had her stop and switch cars with me, but I didn't see or smell anything on my way to work. She's worried and I'm no mechanic, so does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be. I guessed that there may have been a short somewhere, but again, I am no mechanic.

maybe a short, but i wouldn't risk it. take it to your dealer right away.
