HI! If anyone could answer my Q, I'd be ever so grateful!!
I have a hole in the exhaust resonator, therefore need a new one . . .
Is this something I could do or do I have to take it in?
If I could do this . . . HOW??

Thank you!!

unless you can weld and have a lift, you can not replace it your self. some autostores do have exhaust repair kits/patches. i never used one my self, but you may want to check it out.

see my thread: cracked resonator pipe here in this forum. the resonater on my 2001 cracked & had to be replaced by saturn. the car is a year out of warranty, but they paid for the repair with some complaining from me. they changed the design on the new resonater to a bullet style that is much stronger than the original one. since the exhaust is all welded, they had to cut the pipe behind the resonator. the replacement resonator bolts up to the rear of the converter, then just clamps to the rear pipe. you can do it yourself if you are properly equipped. you might want to buy the resonater from saturn because it is stainless steel & will last a long time. i think it is around $150.00 for it.

Just take it off, in Pennsylvania, it will still pass inspection, and when i did it to my car, it didnt make it any louder. All you need to buy is 36" of 2 and 1/4" piping and an adapter to 1 and 3/4". Also 2 clamps. it will cost around $20. I have a 1994, so the size of piping may be different, but Advanced Auto Parts can give you a diagram of your exhaust with the exact measurements. Can the resonator [I'm guessing this is the woven steel section located just to the rear of the engine] be cut off with a hack saw and cutter wheel? I want to replace it with a section of pipe.

the woven area is not the resonator, that is the flexpipe, it dampens the effects of engine movement on the exhaust pipes, it should not be removed, without it you risk causing cracks in the exhaust and a small chance of increased vibraition.

the resonator is a length of pipe maybe about 3 feet long that has a greater diameter then the rest of the exhaust.

this thread is 3 years old, i am now closing it. for more discussion about cars other then mention in the orginal post, please start a new thread
