Redline MPH

I own a 1989 Civic DX. As it's a DX, it does not have a tach (as well as power steering and some other "luxuries"). I was wondering if anyone with the same car/motor could tell me at what speeds redline comes in each gear (it does have a speedometer ). The car is completely stock (except for the sound system). Thanks for the help.

Look in your owners manual mate. I looked in mine when I started driving my 91 Civic LX 5 Speed. Its somewhere near the back.

Here's what I have:
1st-starts
2nd- at 14mph
3rd- at 27mph
4th- at 39mph
5th- at 53mph
thats by the book.

Just listen to your engine, when it starts to rev and moan, shift. I unfortunately relied on the speed. And I did that DIY Custom Gauges...and I completely fucked my needles...so now its listening to the engine...and hoping I'm not doing 23945242840mph in a school zone.

20-30-40-50 is a good basic paradigm

That's usually about where I shift. I was just wondering what was safe if I wanted to have a little fun without bouncing it off the rev limiter to find out.

Is it possible to take the OEM gauge cluster from an LX/EX that has a tach and put it in a DX? and is it an easy install, like, just slide it in, or is there more required?

Not too hard...My friend had a DX and he swapped in an LX cluster...since we were amatuers it took us about 5 hours. If you search around a little bit, you can find a good how-to to use.

Honestly though...I would just install an external tachometer. Those are purty.

And if I'm not mistaken...and my cars not a complete P.O.S....It's not that easy to redline a stock...is it? Cause I know I've tried...and well, it was a pathetic attempt.

Are you guys talking about the speed at redline, or the speed at the rev limiter?

here are the DX trans ratios and speeds if shifted at 7K
1st: 3.25 37.01mph
2nd: 1.894 63.5
3rd: 1.259 95.5
4th: .937 128
5th: .771 156

final drive ratio is 3.888.
trans ratios are the same as a Si, but the Si has a 4.25 final.

Thanks a lot guys. The highest I've taken it is about 55-60 in 2nd but I've never actually hit the rev limiter. mmmm...i love 2nd gear.

i know my car is not a pos and i have a dx .... it's not hard and its not easy, i mean you can just ride out the gear and redline like that. it just takes a long time...lol

GVR has it on the money. (tested by me lol 95 in 3rd ...lol...never again)

whoa, i love the bunchies-riding-banana gif.

i'm a bit wary of taking my car that high anyway as it has 237k miles and i don't have the money for anything else right now. hehe...i just wish the a/c worked.

hatch dx. that's a nice set up with your tach, about how much did that cost and how hard was it to install and callibrate?

the tach is easy just follow the directions and you cant mess up. i dont remember how much it was but it is a sun pro and seems pretty accurate. if i had another cover for the top of the steering column i would move the tach to the spot all the way to the drivers side on the dash cuz its in the way and if a light (oil, break, check engine)were to come on i wouldn’t see it unless it was dark in the car.
