"the beats. hip hop as you would think is more like clubbing dancing type shit, where as rap is more lyrical type stuff"

Rap IS hip hop.

Hip hop is a culture started in the mid to late 70's in New York. There were many gangs that would fight, and it would bring them togeather instead of fighting. They would work hard to become skilled in areas such as dancing(breaking) or being a great dj and even compete as people in sports compete instead of fighting. It's about expression, originality, unity, and respect/knowledge. There are four main elements to it and one forgotten element that so many people "leave out" or forget. There are lesser elements but I wont' get into those.

The dance, rocking your body, "breaking" if you will. Real hip hop dance = breaking, party dance, rockin, freestyle. The pop type dance people do today like Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears is not hip hop. It's watered down jazz. Any of the dancing in the movie You Got Served that is not breaking is not hip hop, and believe me, there is plenty of non hip hop dance in that movie that they think they're "battling" with. The original and in my mind only battle dance is breaking. Breaking has foundation, specific moves, and is a formed dance.

The mc, master of ceremonies, is not a rapper. At jams(hip hop events) he'd be up on stage running things, he'd also entertain by rhyming which is also known as rapping today. Most people know rappers today as a MC on wax. Rap originally meant to speak out, I think Rapper Delight album from Sugar Hill Gang is where hip hop recording artists got the name.

Then there is the dj who would cut beats, play breaks for the mc to rhyme to and people to dance to.

Then there is the graffitti artist who in my opinion got off on the wrong foot because it's illegal and disrespectful.

There is also knowledge/respect which should speak for itself.

So there you have it, hip hop as a culture and rap as a part of hip hop culture.

rap IS NOT hip hop. who in the hell said anything about britney spears and justing timberlake being hip hop? honestly who? you make it quite obvious that you have really had nothing to do with the urban culture at all. you got served was a joke, all breakers A.K.A. b-boys A.K.A breakdancers laughed our asses off at that movie. you got served? what the hell does that mean. and how did you get so off topic, he asked for good artists not what you thought you knew hip hop was.

If you liked that Roots CD check "Do You Want More?!" It's by far my favorite. And how come no one has mentioned RjD2? Or Sage Francis, or Mr. Lif. Listen to Buck 65, awesome stuff but a little on the mellow side. Atmosphere is getting pretty famous, but if you head back to their "OverCast" then you will find some good stuff. Sorry for the long post, there's tons of good music out there.

Haha, I hope that kid is joking. LMFAO!!

Hip Hop is club music and rap is lyrics? haha, since when did rap ever have good lyrics? It's all about bling bling and being "gangsta."

An 8 year old could write the same lyrics that you hear on MTV, BET or the radio. 90% of the time they don't even write their own songs. Shi, rock songs have deeper lyrics than rap. A kiddie pool is deeper than what you hear on the radio these days. It's pretty much for rich teens who are trying to be "gangsta."

I wonder how many times Al Capone or John Gotti would have let MTV or BET walk through their "cribs." Now what's really gangsta is having 16 year olds look at the way they live.

Real Hip Hop is pretty much lyrics. I don't know any hip hop song with lyrics that come down the level of rap. I mean, you can have the greatest beat, but it's not hip hop if the lyrics don't back it up. If it doesn't pass for hip hop, it's gotta be rap which is pretty much bad lyrics over a pop beat.

But then again, you also need a beat to back up a good song. It can be hip hop with a shitty beat, but most great hip hop songs have good beats. You're not gonna hear radio beats on hip hop songs. Listen to a few instrumentals. Primo, Hi-Tek and Tony Touch are on top of my list. Listen to Nas's Illmatic. Those are real hip hop beats with lyrics to back it up. The song might not strike you at first, but once you listen to a real hip hop song a few times, you can see how good the beats become.

Just because it's called "Hip Hop" doesn't mean that it's club music where YOU may be hip hopping like a bunny.

And there's a lot more to hip hop than there is to rap. I'm not even gonna get into break dancing, grafiti and everything else.

RJD2's beats are by far some of the best. Sometimes I can just listen to the instrumentals and relax. That's what I was talking about when I was talking about real hip hop beats.

Doesn't AF have rules about productive posts? this thread didn't ask people's personal opinions on rap music. This kid asked what's good to listen to. He wants to broaden his horizons by exposing himself to different music. at least he's trying. i give him more credit than the closed minded bigots we call moderators.

What a sanctimonious little twat. I'm quite happy to be a closed minded bigot when it comes to music,I've had 40 years to decide what I like, and rap definitely isn't it.Seen too many milky bar cowboys trying desperately to be black, and failing miserably, and too main spoiled little rich kids getting all excitable about the 'music' of the ghetto to give it any credibility whasoever.Yup,I'll go with being a closed minded bigot on the subject of music as long as BP2K2Max is prepared to accept that in applying the term to the 100+ people who moderate this forum,he's one too.

This thread has served it's purpose. You would have to have several thousand dollars to purchase all CDs by all artists listed.

Thanks,
Management.
