Transmission not shifting until it warms up

98 Sable.
The transmission stays in first gear until it warms up. I have to drive it about 2 miles and after that it shifts fine. Also the speedometer has quit for some odd reason. I can't imagine that the speedometer would have anything to do with it. Also my engine light stays on now. The car ahs 95,000. I'm gentle with it so the car shouldn't be upset with me. Any ideas?

It sounds like a shift sensor. The speed controls the shift points. It would be worth doing a dyagnostic on it while the light is lit. It should point to the problem. So yes the speedo and shift may be related.
