Hi, is it possible to clean a sticking egr valve? If so what kind of solvent would be suitable. I drive a 97 sl2 with a linear egr valve. thanks in advance

yes you can, just take the off the two 10mm bolts, spray some regular good old carb/choke cleaner in there and wipe all the junk off, maybe spray a little in the passiges in the head. if its real bad, some people (including me), will take a small screwdriver or whatever and really rip the carbon out. weather or not the little valve can move easilly by hand is really the only why to tell when you're done. when you put the EGR back on, you may or may not need a new gasket, get one from your dealership just in case, its about $5.

check the vacuum lines and all the passages, they may need to be cleaned and or replaced as well!

The part you wanna break loose is called the pintle. Looks like a little torx screw on the bottom of the EGR. Is is supposed to go up and down. Carb cleaner will break it loose.
