sum1's probbly said this before but what the hell is gm thinking ? mit sucked when the impala went front wheel but now they think they can sell limited edition supercharged ss editions ? they just have 2 realize that they are taking the roots of a great company and just turning the cars that use 2 be great in2 cars that are completely different but with the same badges.

The old Impalas were extremely strong, powerful cars that a father could drive, and his son (or daughter) could take out on a friday night and let it loose...The new Impalas are really just old man, and middle class white bread family cars with absolutely no attraction to the younger generation. Throwing in a supercharger doesn't really help an outdated 3.5L 200hp pushrod engine

3.8 Liter. While it's no Impala of yesteryear, it'll smoke just about any import or domestic in the same platform. The 3800 is also one of GM's most reliable engines ever.

please, look at the engines the japs are putting out and look at the numbers they put out a 3.8 in japan would make like 300 hp!

same platform as in 6 cyl? then we're comparing it to the rb26dett's and the 2jz-gte's. thats not much of a comparison. though the series 3 3800 is a very nice engine and even nicer supercharged (especially in the grand prix i'd love to have...) it doesn't compete with the japanese engines performance wise or longevity wise. don't get me wrong, i love american cars and the engines in them-but IMO japanese cars are better engineered. sorry to offend anyone if i have. that's my 2 cents.

but on the subject of impala's, i do agree, it's a shame of what the impala has turned into. once a LT1 muscle car is now a family sedan. i can only hope and wait that the v8 rwd returns.

I don't mean platform as "V6" Learn some Car terminology! The Impala is on the Mid-size family hauler with an attitude platform. Carries the wife and kids comfortably, but has a little performance kick. This platform Includes:

Toyota Camry VVT
Honda Accord VTEC
Buick Regal GS
Chevy Monte Carlo Supercharged SS
Chevy Impala supercharged SS
Pontiac Grand Prix GTP

Just to name a few. All of those cars will do what they're intended to do, granted some better than others. But I would buy the Buick Regal GS, because the insurance will be cheaper, I'm already well familiar with the engine, and I'm a Buick Man. If I knew nothing about the 3.8 liter engine, the Accord would probably get my purchase.

As for Import > Domestic and Domestic > Import, I'll be honest, take a brand new Accord, and a new Impala, drive them both the same, perform preventative maintenance the same, and both will last roughly the same time. GM has had quality issues in the past, but honestly, almost all carmakers are building cars at the same level of quality.

BETTER CHECK SOME PERFORMANCE FIGURES BEFORE REALLY SAYING THIS! Most of the Older impalas (even with the POWER) were close to the same performance figures as the new supercharged V6 impalas. I would not be surprised if the newer one surpasses them in many ways.

I also agree though that GM should not have brought back the Impala as a FWD. i do believe it should have stayed RWD.

my bad, i guess i did not know what 'platform' you were refering to, as there are many different platforms pertaining to cars. number of cylinders for one, coupe vs. sedan, purpose of the car, etc etc...so there isn't one specific feature about a car i should know when you say "it's platform".

*edit*and just to be technical, i didn't say v6's because the two engines i compared to the 3800 were i6's

The automobile world now has front drivers as mid-size cars, give it 5 years, and almost all cars will be RWD again. You can see this happening in cadillac already, FWD catera and seville are gone, RWD CTS and STS have replaced them.

Thank God for that!! I'm sick of not being able to purchase a full frame rwd CAR with a V8. I think that's why some people buy trucks... a lack of choice. Mind you, I doubt that they will be full frame cars, but beggars can't be choosers.

I've always been a GM guy (no malice to other companies) and am getting very disappointed with them not keeping with nameplate heritage. If they're going to build a different car, give it a different name. How hard is it to name something?

I'm looking forward to the day that I'm ready to buy a brand new car, and can actually find something that appeals to me in my price range. I'm currently contemplating going after a new GTO (even though it looks like a big Cavalier/Grandprix cross) or, in 2008 - a new Camaro (depending on the drivetrain and styling).

When I saw my current car up for sale, I jumped on it, mainly because it was the last of the rwd GM full size cars.... well ok.... being a 9C1 didn't hurt either.... but damn it, what the hell is going on with GM. Get your sh*t straight! Where's MY options? What about what I want?

BurnM, what I said is nowhere proven, it was merely speculation, and I see it happening very soon, look carefully at the trend in drivetrains, 350Z, several Infinitis, Mazda RX8, GTO CTS, STS, All this came about in a year and a half or so, if the trend continues, only a few models, (IE- Honda Civic and the other rice burning crowd) will remain FWD.

I have also heard rumors from a retired GM service tech of a possible 2006-2007(?) RWD LS-1 powered Impala. He wasn't sure this was completely accurate, but he has heard talk of it. Anyway, I would love to see the Impala return with more muscle, but in the mean time, I love my '02 Impala LS.

Yeah, I'm sure it's just shop talk around the water cooler right now..... but at least there's talk about it!
