Best VW Hatch

I want a VW hatchback, I love the looks. I know that they are extremely reliable, cheap insurance, good gas mileage, and lots of available mods. The ones that I know about that I like are the Golf I (mid-80's), Golf II (late-80's), Golf III (early and mid-90's), Golf IV's (late 90's), 2003 20th anniversary Golf, any Golf GTI, Rabbit GTI (non diesel or electric, non covertible) and Lupo GTI's, but those are rarely seen in the U.S. If there are any other hatchbacks, non-VW that kick ass please specify. Please reply, and thank you for information, Auto Forums is the best car site on the web.

There are a lot of good hatchbacks, and the Golf is one of them. I think the Civic hatchback is better, but that's just me.

i agree with polygon.
its fkin quick, the only reason people didnt buy loads of them when they came out was because they were too expensive.
now they are cheap, and you get a damn good car for the money.
edit: the vr6 version im talkin about...

Agreed, the Golf V is the only Golf that has managed to touch the Mk2's handling capabilities after all these years, says a lot really.
The best VW hatch is probably still the R32, just for the engine.

dude, the R32 is like $25,000 at least. I'm not made of money, and this is my first car. Plus, I could think of a billion cars I could get for that much money, that would cream an R32.

the funny thing is that you've only got 2 gti's listed.
what about an mk2 gti, with the 16v engine?
or swap a vr6 in it .
the best vw hatches are not GL models, they're GTi's.
you should include those in this comparo of yours.

If you don't like the site, piss off. We have 200,000 members. If you left it wouldnt break many hearts. People are giving you their opinions, you're shooting them down and then complaining for some reason. If you'd like to stay around, watch yourself. Memorise this (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/guidelines.html) if you'd like to remain part of AF. Otherwise i'll gladly show you the door.
Another thing: use the edit button instead of making three consecutive posts.

My brother took a Mk 2 Jetta up to 250,000 km's without any problems. EXTREMELY reliable engines.
Dodgy electrics on the Mexican ones, but these are people who previously built Beetles and Kombi's. Get a German one and it'll provide trouble-free motoring for about 10 years.

...and again i'm gonna offer my brit based opinion...
ignoring the R32, how about the last golf V5 (make sure its got the sports pack)?
it's a bit pricey when new but it's a cracking second hand buy.
