have been saving a project 65 impala ss convertible for 25 years.
got it out yesterday and am puzzled by body / idtag / vin numbers
vin 166675s297378
body id tag says
08B (august 2nd week ?)
002350 body build #
rear end # dh 0702G e (331 posi july 2nd week eaton posi)
body has both upper control arms on rearend for big block?
body has trick curvy throttle bellcrank for big block?
tag looks 100% original
vin tag looks 100% original & match title
when was car made ?
was it 396 or 409 ?
help... im dying to know

16667 for SS V8 convertible
5 for 1965
S for St. Louis assembly
297378 sequence number with 100000 being the first one. So your looking at a mid year car I'd think. I'd think 396 but can't say for sure.

396 and 409 were available in 65.
vin shows a ss vert with v8, built in st louis, mo. in the second week of august, 1965.
without an actual build sheet (remove the back seats and rear panels, it could be in there!), i am not sure if there is a way to determine wether or not it is a true BB car or which BB it would have been. i am sure thre may be a purist somewhere that can figure it out....

I've read there were no 409s put in after February of 65, so an August build date would pretty much make it a 396.
