2000 Impala Crunching Noise

I would like any info or experience that someone may have on this. My car has 70k miles on it. Currently it drives and runs great. However, for awhile now it has made a crunching, tapping sound in the front end whenever I first take off or begin braking or come to a stop. It isn't a CV joint clanking as it doesn't do it when turning. The sound also doesn't come from the back so it negates the sloshing fuel tank problem. It is definitely from the front when initially taking off it will crunch or tap a little and when coming to a stop. I almost sense that something is loose in the front and is flexing. Any help would be great.

Just a guess ... but could it be strut bearings?

I`m a police officer, and every lumina/impala that we have will start doing that after a while. I dont remember what it is, but I suggest(cuase I wouldnt remember to do it for you) contacting what ever large police department that utilizes the junky car for patrol and asking them. They should know because they repair their own cars.
No help there then call a dealership and ask to speak directly to the technician and ask him.
Hope that helps!

that noise is the intermediate shaft binding/popping, it often sounds like the car is coming apart but it is easily fixed, the GM part is #26098237 which is a lubricant kit to correct the problem

Had the same problem - Steering Column needed the Lube thing.
Dealer charged me $95.00 (That's in Texas Dollars) heard they charge Yankees more (Must be a UNION thing)....
Haven't had any problems since.
