here we go... the official thread.

this is the 1985 N/A mr2 that i bought on the way home from the junkyards for 100 USD.
http://img20.photobucket.com/albums/v60/ac427cpe/mr2/MR2-_firstday.jpg
it had a non-working engine (perfect for what i wanted it for) but because of that, was deemed "not worth anything" as a sportscar.

so.... old engine got pulled, new series2 3sgte bought from Japan, and new engine was put in. ...actually, it was a whole lot more involved than that... so I’ll continue.

major difficulties: new engine mounts and mounting brackets (all of them...), rewiring the engine to the car, custom drive shafts (a variation on the S/C shafts), some clearancing in the engine bay, custom exhaust and downpipe, new fuel pump...
and there were a few other things done to the car...

http://img20.photobucket.com/albums/v60/ac427cpe/mr2/enginewrapper.jpg
new engine, still in the wrapper ;)

I notice in the before and after pics, you've got a new bumper cap on the nose. I suspect this is because of the conversion to a turbocharged engine. It was Wataru, after all, who told us this

"Turbo is powerful. It scares people. It changes the front of the car"

I see clear evidence that after being made turbo, the front of the car is changed!

This is a Porsche 944.

http://road.meatball.net/944/944_front.jpg

This is a Porsche 944 Turbo. Note the clear differences in the front of the car. I rest my case.

cbass is on glue again! :D

Hey, it's magic markers. Get it right.

And did Turbo change the front of the car, or did it not?

ac427cpe
05-29-2004, 06:53 PM

and the tires going on the race rims... :D

http://img20.photobucket.com/albums/v60/ac427cpe/mr2/tire.jpg

yes... booooo on crappy bumper paint :(

oh yeah, and the ones on the left are 215/40/16's

nbw
06-04-2004, 12:43 AM
mmm those slicks would look allot better on your car... :evillol:

well needless to say I am very interested in this project. I would also be interested in any before and after stats on the car such as curbweight,(aprox) 0-60 and other stuff.. :naughty:

ac427cpe
07-02-2004, 05:55 PM
nbw: gave the slicks to a friend, they were like 1/2" too wide. :( were outside the fenderwell, and i can't have that or alter it... it'll change the class of the car. as far as stats go, it was a stock 1985 n/a mr2, and i'll post all the after stuff... hopefully in the next couple weeks.

other updates:
back from china, time to get the car finished.

wiring still = evil.
started her up again, but all the fans go on... and the battery arcs when the cable gets attached. went through some connections and apparently there is a live wire grounded somewhere...
sooooo this happened now
http://img20.photobucket.com/albums/v60/ac427cpe/mr2/DSCN7711.jpg

should be sorted out tonight or after the 4th o' july weekend

happier news, the intercooler is done... actually, was before i left but i have a pic now!
http://img20.photobucket.com/albums/v60/ac427cpe/mr2/DSCN7716.jpg

any way... lots more to come, hopefully soon.

ac427cpe
07-05-2004, 09:51 PM
update: ok, wiring was ok. that's the good news.

alternator, was not ok. apparently it was dead/grounded out inside/being stupid and broken, so i'll just have to get a new one tomorrow.

on the happier note though- the 3sgte sounds amazing!

but bleh, another hundred bucks into the project...

ac427cpe
07-05-2004, 10:23 PM
update again!: new alternator = bought!
tomorrow: get 100 octane
remake AFM bracket so i can solid mount it (and get a scoop!)
ummm.... then wait till the 7 sells so i can get a plate and tags etc...

now i need to think of witty license plates for her...

nbw
07-06-2004, 12:16 AM

how much did you spend on the japan jdm engine ? and why not use the 1998 beam engine 3rd gen. instead of 2nd gen. 3sgte?

ac427cpe
09-10-2004, 11:32 PM
i spent around 2k shipped on the engine, and chose second gen because i plan to modify it. it will be less expensive in the long run this way.

Mk1.5s are GODS among any car on the road.

One of these days I will have one. As soon as I perfect the method for growing a money tree.

Anywho... how much did you spend in total building yours? And how many hours (approximately) did you spend on the build?
