Burning Oil

Hey everyone. I've got a little problem. I have a '93 SC2. Just found out recently that it's burning oil, well, I think that's what the problem is. Blue smoke is coming out of the exhaust. I noticed that it uses a lot of oil, and it's black before it's time to change it. I'm currently using 5w-30 oil, hoping the heavier oil would make a difference. I remember reading somewhere that the 1.9 dohc engines had problems using a lot of oil and that possibly saturn will do something about it? I'm figuring probably would need to rebuild the engine, but would there be any other possible fixes for it?

How often to you have to add oil and how much?
According to Saturn, 1 quart every 3 months/3000 miles is normal.
The blue smoke does not sound normal. Check the PCV valve, it wouldnt hurt to replace either. Possibly check the throttle body too, the throttle plate also sometimes build up black gunk on it, to the point of causing a sticky gas pedal.

Sounds like worn piston rings and oil getting into the combustion chamber. If it doesnt burn too much oil you might just be better off adding some occasionally as oposed to rebuilding the motor.

Saturns burn oil! just the way they are. however if youre actually seeing smoke from the tailpipe then its execssive. the only other option is the new pistion & ring cleaner that GM has come out with. the oil is definetly getting past the rings. you can get it at a saturn dealer. you get the engine hot, turn it off, turn the crank with a wrench until 90 degrees after tdc so that all 4 pistons are 1/2 way up(or down), pull the plugs and pour it in. let it sit for as long as possible, but atleast 2 hours, overnight would be best. then remove all the excess fluid from the cylinders, put the plugs back in and start it up. run it just long enough to get warm, the change the oil and filter with Mobil 1 5w-30. thats your only option that does not require teardown...........

yup, they do burn oil. if this is getting to be a daily event.. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT NOW!!! (sorry) i would definately say that you need to get your rings replaced on your pistongs...
