Well since I got rid of the NR and the GT3 is drying I will concentrate on the other two projects I have.

So here we are... Lets see if I can successfully destroy this beautiful kit :)

I got the kit from HLJ couple days ago with studio27 upgrade set. Since then I have been doing some research on the car and working on the rear end. I noticed there are no CF included in this kit which I think is a big miss. (the full view has CF but at 4300 yens) So I ordered the SMS CF templates and couple sheets of CF paper. I wont touch anything cf until they arrive.

While looking at the manual I noticed it said use x-34 metallic brown for the calipers. I though that didnt make sense, so some researh showed that it was not exactly that color. They are actually dark anodic with burnt metal tint to them. I have pictures from the pits and the calipers actually look gloss black! So I decided to use a mixture or dark anodized gray and burnt metal from testors.

Second think that didnt compute was the color of the car tamiya indicated. TS-26 Pure white and TS-51 Racing blue (telefonica blue). I know williams doesnt use pure white but a shade of it, and I coulndt find any TS-51 here in Turkey. another thing is that telefonica blue is not the same shade as the williams blue anyways so I decided to call BMW here in Turkey. After some talk and annoying them for hours, they agreed to mix me the colors of the F1 :iceslolan

These are solvent based acrylic automotive paints. Now I need to find out how to use it in an airbrush :) They are Glasurit brand.

Until I figure these out I will build the disks/calipers and other stuff. Here is how the disks looked like after Studio27 photoetch parts added.

Well is as far as I can take the brakes before the cf decals arrive.

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/disk10.jpg

The brake carriers are painted dark anodized gray, calipers are burnt metal, and the center hub is titanium. Studio27 photoetch part rest in the center is in the original color. the screws on the disks are aluminium.

The molded brake line was removed and made from coated (polished aluminium) copper wire.

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/disk9.jpg

AP decal was applied over the Studio27 Photoetch part and seated in place using microsol...

Enjoy...

After I apply the CF I will touch them up for any mistakes and apply a dull coat over them... until then they will rest...

Right now I am test fitting the body to see where to apply cf and paint x-18

It was just a guess the post was in Turkish Toughbeard. Unfortunately I don't know how to speak it. No need to be sorry bup (you can be forgiven many sins since you must be a WRC fan!).

Yeah it is a bad time to be a McLaren fan. I don't feel let down by the team, they'll come good. Just the people running (into the ground) the once great sport of F1.

Yes the reds just fly away :) lets hope there will be more action..

Here is a pic of what I am doing at the moment.

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/shock1.jpg

I didnt like the detail level of the shocks and I always hate the way the molded shocks look. So I decided to build the shocks :screwy:

I know studio27 makes a shock set but instead of buying those I bought other cool stuff form SMS...

I cut the center part where the spring is molded, after measuring the body of the shock, I used a 2mm styrene pipe to make the body. I drilled the top and bottom of the shock mounts with 1 mm drill so the shaft can be glued. I placed a 1 mm styrene rod throught the new shock body and glued everything to the end. I cut the 1 mm rod to the right length.

The spring was made with solder...

Now I am going to make the other side as well and start painting these babies...

Well I recieved my SMS CF decals today and they are much easier to work with and they are darker. ( I think the silvers can be darker but I am happy,)

I finished one of the shocks.... here how its looks at the moment. Take note that it hasnt dried yet. and has microset on the decal.

That's what I want to know too!!!

Everything looks awesome so far, can't wait to see it finished.

Toughbeard

Count the number of "Full" coils on the original plastic part. in this case there were 4 plus the end parts. mark the coil places on a suitable item u will wrap the wire on. In this case I used a toothpick whick was the right dimension.

Leaving about 2 cms (about an inch) This is to make sure you can handle and bend the spring easier. Bend the wire (copper here) over the toothpick (or whatever you decide to use) Make sure to put half a turn more. this makes it easier to gauge the length and the number of coils. if long you can always trim to right size but if its short you have to remake the spring.

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/tutorials/spring/sprg_mkng1.jpg

here you can see the marks on the toothpick I used as a guide...

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/tutorials/spring/sprg_mkng2.jpg

Once carefully pulled out of the toothpick ( I MEAN carefully) you trim the two ends to the right length..

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/tutorials/spring/sprg_mkng3.jpg

Now place the spring back on the toothpick and shape the ends of the springs.

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/tutorials/spring/sprg_mkng4.jpg

Basically, you close the spring by touching the end of the spring to the coils. then you remove the spring again carefully and sand the ends of the springs with a flat file. just be paitient and let the file do the job. Dont force the file or you will just ruin all the work you have done. when you look at the spring from the top (you will see it as a circle) it should look shiny and flat. The end of the wire can be sanded hair thin where it touches the coil. Once you are sure, place the spring on the toothpick again and check for misalignment of the coils, the length, fix everything.

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/tutorials/spring/sprg_mkng5.jpg

Remove the spring and you are done...

Thanks Toughbeard, great step-by-step. It could become its own tutorial and be added to the FAQ!
That's basically the way I've made coils in the past, it's just that you managed to get the spacing perfect. I had to have several goes and fudge things around to get a decent result on my Stratos. Maybe the secret is copper wire? I used steel in the past.

Well, I recieved my SMS CF decals and templates for the FW-24 and these cf decals are awesome. very easy to work with.

But (oh-oh), Soon I realized that these templates didnt have all what we needed. It seems more like a template set for the full view version which comes with its own set of Cf decals. So I was missing some decals...bummer...

Now looking at the arms and the empty decal sheet in my hand, I knew I need to make these myself but how in the world without wasting too much or no decal... I read a tutorial here in the AF forums about making templates but that just doesnt work here (for me at least) as these parts are too fragile and my hands are too big :)

The looking at the parts I realized something, lets see if you can see it, too...

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/cfpoz0.jpg

As I look at the part I noticed the shadow of the arms cast on the paper below. :thinkerg: ( I always use white paper underneat the models before painting or when cutting decals). So I grabbed my drawing pen and drew the outline...

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/cfpoz1.jpg

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/cfpoz2.jpg

I am not exactly an artist I know I know... :grinno: I cut the outline out using a steel ruler and placed it on the back of the decal shhet and cut a piece of decal the same shape of the template.

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/cfpoz3.jpg

then follow the instruction for the decal and apply it... Here is the result of about 10 min work...

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/cfpoz4.jpg

I hope this will be useful.. Enjoy...

Neat work-around there 'beard and a great buildup so far!

The way I create templates is to use a low-tack masking tape (I prefer the new Tamiya rice paper tape) and simply create the template by laying the tape onto the part and then using the edge of a colored pencil to mark the actual outline of the part onto the tape. Then pull the tape off and either create your template from cardstock or put the tape directly onto the decal sheet and trim away.

I'm using this technique to create the carbon fiber test mule of the Porsche GT1 Evo out of the Revell Champion Porsche kit...

I recieved the hardener and the thinner for the glasurit paints the day before and just got around to do a test on a piece of scrap strene....

if you wait for more than 5 mins in the pot, then I noticed I neet to put thinner in, but if I use the paint as soon as I mix it with the hardener, it is thin enought to be used from my badger, but I thing a tiny drop of thinner will improve things.

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/painttest.jpg

The paint has orange peels and all sorts of bumps and dust, as I didnt do any cleaning :) I just wanted to test the paint...

I am waiting to see if the paint thinner will warp the plastic as well...

Hi 'Beard, coming together very well!
Is that paint you've got metallic? Doesn't look to be in the pics, or maybe the Williams isn't truly metallic :dunno:
By front suspension do you mean the steering rack and reservoirs visible when the nose is removed? I've got a couple of pics of in there, but not much, the teams like to cover those bits up! PM me your email addy and I'll scan and send what I've got.

Hello Again, sorry for the lack of updates but I have been quite busy with work. Finally got the chance to work on the car again...

As you know I got the paint mixed at BMW here in Turkey, and I have been itching to try it out. I did a test try but you know it was not very good looking. I had some doubts about the color as well until I found a close up of the car...

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/headshot.jpg

Here is the front wing after painting, decals and a light coat of gloss coat.

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/frontwing1.jpg

here is the bottom of the wing which is covered with cf decal.

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/frontwing2.jpg

I then moved to the cockpit. I painted the seat with mr color s gundam color paints (GP-01 blue) which I think is a close match to the ugly blue williams uses :eek7: I applied CF decals to the sides of the seat and the cockpit walls and the front bulk head. The seat belts that came with the kit had good detail but was toy looking, and the photoetch seatbelts studio27 supplied were just too flat :banghead: so I decided to use a mixture. I actually dumped the tamiya seat belts and made the shoulder straps from styrene and used the studio27 seat belts. I glued the styrene on the seat belts, added some detailing on the seatbelts and placed them on the seat... I am much happier now :iceslolan
