Good luck getting it finished by Saturday. I look forward to seeing it done. The seat and harness look great.

Your blue paint colour looks an excellent match to that photo, how does it compare to the kit decals?

Toughbeard
05-18-2004, 06:10 PM
it decals seem a little darker... but not too bad... much better than the ts-51 :)

05-19-2004, 02:58 AM
If you think the blue is too dark, it probably is. I remember that I read some where that matching colour in from 1:1 to 1:20 should not be exact. The colour in scale should look a bit brighter than the actual colour. Is it called the scaling effect?

Toughbeard
05-19-2004, 03:30 AM
yes :)
you use 10% white on 48 scale airplanes to give the fading effect, but I dont think I needed it for this scale :) I think I can live with it ;)

edit:

Side pods are cf'ed, cf ing front arms

Speeding up the building process as I have one day left to build this thing...

Here are the wheels and tires... they just need the final gloss coat...

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/tires.jpg

This is how the chassis looks like at the moment from the bottom side..the top needs to be finished. The middle section is painted XF-57 buff as the manual suggests

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/chassis1.jpg

Here is the radiator finished. Silicon hose is made by painting a thick layer og GS Paint and I wrapped chrome foil tape over it for the hose claps..

http://www.toughbeard.com/jpg/fw24/radiator1.jpg

I have most of the complex cfing done so it should be relatively easy from now on... only the painting is left ... I have the white base and the first coat on the car at the moment. I will let the base dry as much as possible and do a wet on wet paint job just like real car then top it with gloss. and hope everything holds on :grinno:

Masked and painted the blue... looks great...

took the mask off.... not so great...I ll post some pictures as soon as I get my senses back as I was the head of the contest organization... I am pretty worn out at the moment...

You can see the pics at www.modelciler.org site (I hope they posted them) I need a week off so I get get some rest then first thing I will finish the FW-24 as BMW is waiting for it here in Istanbul for their display :)

Argh! Have a nice rest!! (you and the paint!-better for it to dry between two coats!) ;)
I didn't managed to see the pics on the site: I did understand nothing! If they're not supposed to be on the first page, in which thread of the forum (that's what it is, isn't it?) are they supposed to be?...

Well It has been just too long since my last update but I just was not in the mood to look at the car.

Anyway I finally got to work on the car. Placed the right brake assembly on the arms as well. Finished CF job on the back end of the trans.

Just need to finish the cf'ing on the brakes and touch up the arms. Then on to adding the parts to the transmision and the engine.

Looks good still Toughbeard. I have this kit and the Lion Roar photo-etch set for it. I will be watching yours for the final outcome. I guess I should order up the cf too. :)

CF looks really good. The suspension arms look like a royal paint to template and CF. You are doing great so far. The infamous little thing that ruins a paintjob happens to the best of us(trust me). Keep up the good work!

Looking good, are you using decal for the carbon fibre or spraying through a mesh? Either way it's great work.

Toughbeard
09-02-2004, 01:58 AM
I am using decals for the cf. I ordered the SMS template set and couple more plain sheets. and believe me you will need it as the SMS set does not include everything in the template. I used the pics I was sent for the tamiyas cf pattern plus my own.

Wow, looking good!!! I just took up my fw24 again as well and am now also building the rear suspension (with SMS detailset btw). Just wondering; what color did you use for the brake-callipers and drive-shafts? The color suggested in the instructions seems way off to me and I like the color you used better :D

When I started this kit I already had the detail set from studio27 so i didnt get the sms set.

The calipers are metalizer Burnt metal, the drive safts are dark anodic gray (metalizer) and the golden section on the saft is actually brass painted (metalizer).

Thanks! found it at my local hobbyshop, but I have one more question; as these paints are "for for use in airbrush only", do I still have to thin these paints??

MM's metalizers are just fine out of the jar, load up the airbrush and have fun.

Niclas

Toughbeard
09-03-2004, 01:00 PM
yup what Niclas said is absolutely right. Just makes sure you shake it well so all the pigments are floating an not sitting at the bottom of the jar :)

use primer underneat the metalizers or they easily scratch and paint do not adhere too well on to the surface of a well polished metalizer paint.

proosen
09-03-2004, 01:17 PM
Came to think of another thing about the metalizers. Be sure to have a very good and smoothed surface before you put on the metalizer as it's not very forgiving on scratches, it doesn't hide anything. It rather put empahsize to any mar in the surface.
BTW, great work Thoughbeard! Keep 'em coming.

Toughbeard
09-04-2004, 04:55 AM
yeah I know. The fedex logos just refused to hide under the gloss paint. And the wing started to look ugly a very heavy coat of clear so stopped spraying and finished the wing as it is.

The three project I have done so far has been total disasters from the start up on the paint works... NR, GT3 and this. I am just making myself feel good by thinking that, it is my first motorcycle, first car and first race car... I may build a truck next just in case so I can say it is my first Truck :lol2:

So here is the engine:

What next....

- UnderTray
- Side pods
- rear wing
- Stands

No, I can never get bare metal foil to get texture. so I use it only where I need very shiny and a thin coat. Plus it is expensive. The foil is ordinary house hold cooking foil. Takes shape very well and it is more sturdy than the bmf.

I will be using this foil to cover the under tray and the cowling as well. Hope I wont mess it up. :) I hate trying new things in this kind of projects :screwy:

Looking at the Engine, those scratchbuild shocks really do make a huge difference in that engine. Looks amazing.

Good luck with the aluminum foil. I will be using it on my F189 for floorpan and parts of the monocoque. My reference pictures shows the heat sheilding to be messy(so cigarette foil wouldnt work) so aluminum foil is the only way to go. I found that by crinkling it up into a loose ball and then flattenin it out. Then rolling it with a rolling pin gives a very good textured surface without being too large. Im intrigued to see how yours turns out!

That is exactly whay I have done, the first time. But I realized the texture is messy. Actually, depending on the way you fold or squish teh aluminum foil you have more control over it then just making it in to a ball. The photo I have showed that the aluminum insulation had large vertical creases and smaller horizantal ones. So I folded the aluminum foil to give sharp vertical lines and pressed on it to give smaller irregular horizantal lines when unfolded. Pretty bizzare actually :eek7:

Amazing build very detailed and acurate, i got a question with the foil i have been trying to make a heat plate for my f1-2001 ferrari but i didnt know what glue to use. Can you tell me the glue you used to get the foil to stick to the plastic. tnx

StephenDeli

Super glue works just fine.

Toughbeard
09-05-2004, 02:17 PM
use clear elmers glue, or microscale crystal clear. it is easy to work with, clean and leaves no residue to be seen.

Like stephen said super glue will work fine too, but I always fine it hard to control and it will damage it used wrong...

The pods are all cfed, I will add more cf inside once it is on teh car and secured.

Everything on the undertray is cfed except for the center where the driver section sits and the places where I places aluminum foil.

here you can see I marked the places where foil and decals will go.

I sure have given a break :D I sure have a talent on destroying paint jobs. I have put away all my plastic models after I successfully destroy the new paint on the fw24 (yes - again, anyone counting how many times that happened LOL) anyways I had been racing RC cars all summer and since the rc season is out and the only racing we have is the miniZs, I can return to building kits.

I started practicing painting on scrap pieces of plastic, and I do have alot of shiny pieces now :) At least I hope I wont destroy another paint job (yeah right :grinno: )
I was going to throw this kit away but I put so many hours in it that I just could not... So I am continuing the project where I left off which has been draging just too long.

Yesterday, I put the white on the cockpit ( after scratch building the shock cover that I lost of course) I have finished the rear wing today. I am going to wait (you see I learned paitence) for tomorrow to put the gloss coat on the wing.

I will post pictures tomorrow ( this has nothing to do with paitence, but with batteries that are dead)

Thanks,

I got the white and the blue on the mid section now. I put the gloss coat on the rear wing as well. I am just going to let them dry for couple days before working on them again.

Mean whie I ll start working on the engine cover. I put the initial white base couple months ago, so it is dry now :) I painted the inside of the cover semi gloss black. I will mask of the black and paint the final coat of the white and let that dry ....

all that drying time.... what should I do....

all left form that list is the steering wheel, connectors, electrical lines and junctures. I am waiting for the mid section to finish so I can attache the side pods on. Then I will put the detail on.

One more day and I will have the black put on the mid section. then it will be down hill :)
