You have to drop the pan and pull the valve body to do it. Sure its worth it. What brand is it?

Shift kit install is fairly easy. I reccomend Trans-go much better than most of the $50 shit ones and it makes a huge difference!

Just get a trans-go stageII. Ya I'd say you can do it yourself. Shouldnt need to change the converter or anything like that. Just drop the valve body, pull the gov. ect ect. Probably easier to just go ahead and drop the trans. Not sure where the govener is on your trans. Trans-go comes with pretty good directions for the first timer. Good luck.

Dropping a trans isn't an easy job for a newbie. I replaced my AOD in my drive way on jackstands, not a fun job, but it was a good thing I knew what I was doing.
As far as installing a shift kit, it can be done by yourself, but it can also be tricky so don't rush it. The Trans-Go should come with a video on how to install the kit. I would highly recommend you watch this fully! The transmission DOES NOT need to be removed, just the pan dropped, filter taken out, then the kit will have new parts you will have to install in place of old ones inside the valve body. Now be prepared for a mess, because there's a lot of tranny fluid in the pan when you have to lower it, and there's no drain plug.

While you have dropped the pan take the time to install a drain plug even if you never end up using it... it only cost like $2 at a local parts store. Also consider a tranny cooler to go with your shift kit.

So yall really think that a nice transgo kit would be alot better than a $50 B&M shift improver kit (only one available for my 99 4R70W)? How much is one?

The $50 dollar ones are a waste of money. Trans-go usually runs about $100.

I had the B&M shift improver kit in my old tranny, all I can say is, I was not impressed!

I have the B&M shift improver and I love it. Of course me and my dad who is a Ford Senior master tech did a little custom work to valve body. LOL I'm not sure how it would work if it where stock yall are probably right.

I know about 3 years ago when I did my first auto tranny rebuild. There was an article done by 5.0 or MM&FF on shifts kits for the AOD. I remember them picking the trans-go over all the others. That is why I went with Trans-go on my tranny rebuild. Also my expirence of feeling other trannies after a $50 shift improver vs. a $100 Trans-go is not even close in comparision now.

Forget the shift kit. Buy a Lentech valve body, or better yet, convert to a stick!

A stick thats the way to go. Its the best. I only wish it were cheaper to change a 95 T-bird (4.6) to a stick.

Lentech valvebodies are awesome but I don't think the stock AOD internals would last long with that valvebody....
What you need to switch to a stick... 50oz flywheel, inout bearing, clutch disc, pressure plate, clutch fork, clutch cable, TO bearing, t-5 tranny and bellhousing. t-5 shifter, t-5 shifter boot, adjustable or modified crossmember, t-5 tranny mount, t-5 h-pipe bracket, clutch and brake assembly with switches.
I may have forget something but that is most of it. Cost depends on what you buy used new etc..,

Are you still able to get them parts Bobby? If so, we can do a "how to" on this site to show exactly how it's done.

If you are still going to build that trans I would suggest ordering your parts from ATC. I rebuilt a th350 for a friend of mine a few months ago for less than $50. That included shift kit, gasket & seal kit, and a new speedo gear. The kits I used where Trans-Go by the way. I couldnt ask for a better kit, quick, easy, and well worth the money.

Yep I'm working mostly on the body right now still... but just yesterday I pulled the brake/clutch pedal assembly out of the black GT. I have another pedal assembly in my 83 for you Craig.

One more need to know thing for the first timer is contamination is the #1 killer of the auto trans. You will want to wash your hands alot and keep dirt, grit, and grease out of your transmission. Contamination can block fluid passages among many other things to burn up you tranny. The cleaner the better.
