digital display mph and erratic tranny shifting

1995 Windstar LX with digital idsplay. 131k miles on the vehicle.
The other day the transmission wouldn't shift out of 1st but the rpms continue to rise and then it shifted. I noticed that the digital display of the mph was acting erratic. The oil level is good and the smell and color look normal. I can manually shift using the selector but when in "D" the mph is erratic and doesn't want to shift. I swapped out the VSS with my other windstar VSS and no difference.
Oil and filter were change out a last summer.
Is there a correlation between the mph display and the transmission shifting? Is there another sensor? I would appreciate any ideas? Thanks

Since it sounds like you have another van handy to swap parts with, I would try swapping the range sensor. Also check the codes if you haven't already.
