Humming sound

When the car is idling you can hear a humming sound from inside. We thought it was the belt, and sprayed some stuff on it. After we did this, the sound still stayed.

The sound is there only when idling, if you hit the gas, or rev it up, it goes away.

Now, when you open the window, the sound goes away (while the window is going down) So we have reason to believe that it has something to do with the alternator.

What does it sound like to you, and do you think we should replace things, because a new alternator is about $130.

Thanks!

Is this a high pitched squeal? If so, it might be your radio. I was baffled by a high pitched humming that I traced to what I thought was my instrument lighting but Chevy dealer said was coming from the radio which is what controls instrument lighting intensity. Hope this helps.

I have this every now and then but I thought it was just the way wind was blowing through some vents from outside. It seems to happen when it is real windy. Does it happen when it is windy??

it happens all of the time while it is idling.

We sprayed WD-40 in the altinator, and it went away. I will have to ask my dad if it is still doing it, because he drives the car

Actually I noticed this increasing after my last "service" and this morning driving in it was humming a lot.

I guess another "feature" of those great Impala's - can you guess I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone?

Yea, that's what it is.

They put a new Filter in, and it still made the sound, so their gonna put a new pump in.

The good thing is is that it will be covered under warrenty (the filter wasnt, because that is considered "normal" wear, which I agree with)

It almost sounds like a whine?
After three dealers, I learned it is the tach, noisy little bugger. The tach on my monte is noisy too. I replaced it once, then they just insulated it. I can still hear it, just not as loud. Good Luck.
