i have a 1987 mazda rx-7 gxl. i origenally wanted a turbo rx7 but i found this one for $500 dollars so i bought it. i was just wondering how much work it would be if i pulled my engine out and put a turbo 13b in it? how much fabrication would i need to do??? would it be easier to just put a turbo on it. some guy told me that i have to buy all the sensors and everything. should i just junk the car and get a turbo rx7??? i know you probably always get this question i havent had time to look at past posts. if you could give me a few pointers i would appreciate it. thanks for your help.

Check out this recipe, you might find it tasty.
I have been working on rotaries for about 5 years now, some of my friends have up to 20 years in the game. One thing that was brought to my attention about the turboII and the problems that most people encounter with them is that they all arise from having the emmisions and sensors on there, in japan there are no emmisions controls on the motor, thats why they sell block off plates. We have done many motor swaps, rebuilds, and hi power build ups in the past few years and we have always gotten best results when on a budget and building a turboII from an N/A by using the non turbo ECU and wire harness. it eliminates having a boost sensor on the car which cuts off fuel to rotor 2 when boost gets to high, this can ultimately blow ur motor, just use a damn boost controller and a pop off valve, not to be confused with a blow off valve(the stock one is just fine).
Second just run a fuel pressure regulator to make sure the motor has enuff fuel. Remember the RX7 was originally the poor mans Porsche, so dont waste your time saving up for a big fancy turbo kit, use stock stuff if you can get it cheap enough. You can even use a stock turboII intercooler, just have piping made for it to be front mounted.
Some of the cars we've put together might make you laugh because they are so simple and budget built but its not hard to run a lo 14 on the 1/4 with a N/A motor thats got a stock turbo strapped on it.
And as far as reliability, we usually put a car like that together with a daily boost level of about 6-8 pounds, we've blown motors pushing 15 pounds, which the stock turbo cant really handle, but i've been driving my 88 GTU with a stock TurboII kit on it at 10 pounds for about a year now, no problem. Remember stock apex seals are rated to handle a peak of 20pounds of boost, but don't think you can do that all day, lol
Just remember you don't have to think of upgrades in terms of money just think about what works. Have fun with it.
