2000 Winstar Noises

2000 winstar with 52000miles, when you bounce the right (pass side) van up and down you can here clunk sound. I notice that you can move the inner CVJ around with hand, which asume you shouldnt be able to do this? Now changing a axle half shaft is this something you can do yourself? Do you have to have any special tools?

Is there a torn CV joint boot on that side? Does it clunk/tick/grind on turns? This would indicate a worn CV joint. Movement at the hub may be a worn wheel bearing and not the joint at all. I dont think any work in this area requires any special tools, just some time, muscle & know-how.

Its the inner cvj that moves, you can grab the axle and move the cvj up and down, also when turning to the right you hear noise and can feel vibration in the steering wheel when sitting still.

Well a vibration at idle while stopped is not related to driveline, most likely just an engine vibration due to loading of the P/S pump.

The INNERmost section of the RH half-shaft should have *some* play in it where it goes into the transmission case. The joint itself *may* have very slight play as you describe, and it will have more in-out play (quite a lot in fact). This is normal. The litmus test(s) for a bad CV joint are: Noise on acceleration and/or turning (clicking, rumbling), or a torn boot.

The noise you hear at the RH fron corner might be something as simple as a dry anti-sway bar bushing, or as bad as a broken spring (there is a recall for some models of WS for broken front springs).

I took it have the CVjoint look at, they said the joint is fine. They say the bearing in transmission is failing. I'm taking it this weeking to a transmission shop to see what they think and get estimate. But I guessing this is going to be big expense to fix?
