Is there anything I might be able to fix or is this going to be a dealership/fix it shop issue?

Check to see if all your brake lights work. If, by some chance, both the bulbs burn out (or the wires break) the Cruise will not work.
Another common problem is the switches get dirty, they can be cleaned.

I recommend a Haynes. There is a section on Cruise testing. It pointed my to my switches and then with my electronics background I was able to repair a broken trace in the switch assembly.

Hi,
I too used a haynes manual to trobleshoot my steering wheel switches. They were o.k.. In addition to checking my brake lights, brake on/off switch on the brake pedal assy., I checked the brake on/off that is attached to the bottom of the brake master cylinder. I ended up changing that, and putting in a second hand servo/controller. One of those two did the trick. My local dealer quoted me over 400 for the servo/controller. So I bought a used one.
Best of luck.
