as if i don't have enough random projects at various stages on my desk, i add another :iceslolan
this is fujimi's toghe series fc rx7. it's a pretty cool kit but it is extremly simplified... it doesn't even have brakes nor exhaust piping! however, it does come with alot of goodies such as a very different fastback option.
anyway, i made a couple of little mods and lowered it a bit. this is one kit that i think fujimi did a real good job on the wheels with. in all honesty, it was the reason why i chose this kit (other than the fact that it was by far the cheapest fc kit on the market! $10 at hlj!).
about two weeks worth of work on this thing off and on and i'm pretty happy with the results. the back end has some touching up with putty on it but that should be done soon. i might just finish this one
thanks for looking!

you're right! that was actually one of the pictures i found on the web that inspired the front end! but the sides of the bumper where it reaches the wheel arches were'nt to my taste. the gp sports look a bit vip-ish and that wasn't the look i wanted to go for... i also got the vent idea from another car on the web... a bn sports bodykit i believe... that looked more like what i was going for but it was way overdone with the skirts and the bumper overly exaggerated.
i wanted something to go with the smaller wheels and a bit of a streetable drifter look.
i wanted to add a small horizontal vent towards the upper half of the passenger side headlight... or make a headlight conversion to a superg type of headlight with the supplied headlight lenses... but then... i stopped myself for fear of 'overdoing it'.
i already have the colors planned out... a nice pearl white with either a black stock wing or a mid-height wing. i plan on painting the wheel centers a light gunmetal to give it a slight contrast.

i love large wheels and the nice deep dish look that is prevalent on the forums here but i think that the larger wheels take away from the drift look i would like to achieve. i'll try slapping on some different wheels on there to see how they look... i think anything larger than 17s on this would look like a 4x4... any suggestions?

I have one of these too, it arrived from hlj this morning. I can't decide to keep it or put it on ebay and make a quick profit....
If I keep it, I think I'll stay with the AMG wheels from the kit up front, but I have some SSR Formula mesh wheels from an Aoshima kit (they come spare in the Jenesis R30, and they are male) I'll sling on the back...

i got a chance to slap on some paint. i tried to put on the pearl paint over grey primer... lets just say that common sense walked out the door when i started to paint... good thing i only shot one mist coat...
i ended up shooting white primer over the body on top of the grey primer and gunze white over that.
the white looks very white! not that you can see it as i took this shot at night. it doesn't have much orange peel... just some slight texture in some areas but the shine is a bit dull...
i'm just happy the bodywork didn't show any ghost lines! i'll sand it down in a couple of days and finish it off with the pearl coat.

steve, i didn't bend plasitc strip for the lower bumper. however, i used plastic sheet to just make a rough shape so that i can use putty for the shape. i found it easier to sculpt the shape i wanted out of putty than to bend plasit sheet around it. sometimes plastic just won't do what i want it to do.
here's a few shots of the works in progress that i have... one is the fto.. i might scrap this one and redo it... the casting fiasco never goes away... i cherry-picked the best one, redid the front end and the hood vents as well as each wheel arch... and shaped the bumper to get this... the casting was poor... what i did notice was that the caster who did this for me made huge mistakes on it and backfilled the voids with another a different type of resin than the one he originally started off with... thus i have two resin mixtures in the fto body... however, after i painted it and over time, the crap was still outgassing and ruined the paint job on the rear bumper... i don't know what to do about it now... maybe just start over and call it a complete loss and waste of time... a bit disappointed but what can ya do...
the fc has a few coats of pearl on it... kinda hard to take photos of it... still needs to be polished. i'm not too pleased with the pearl... might have to strip it... meaning all the bodywork might be down the drain too... i'll wait and see how it looks in a week or so..
and then there's the nsx... i just don't know what to do with the engine so i decided to let it sit... if you notice the colors... i guess i'm more patriotic than i thought! =)
thanks for the interest.

so here's the long and short of it... the panel lines are too shallow and i'm really getting annoyed each and every time i look at this kit... so what do i do... strip the paint and in effect, having to redo the whole bodykit and all. frustrating stuff... even moreso the third time around. anyway, since i was redoing the panel lines and the bodykit, i threw in a few other mods... why not huh? changed the hood as i messed up scribing the panel lines on the stock scoop and decided to add a little flare over the rear wheel arches. all in all i think it looks okay. i intentionally made the hood area a bit larger so that i can add some mesh underneath it to give it some color contrast (i wanted a color matching hood so i wanted something to set off the hood just a bit). so the end result... er... close to the end result is this. i'm going to go over the panel lines once more just in case. thanks for looking!

Well its been almost a year and guess what? The model is back in primer as I felt that the panel lines weren't as sharp as I would like them to be. The kit took a quick bath and I had to redo the front bumper and the rest of the bodywork. I decided to remove the skirts from the rear bumper as I think it looks a bit better without them. I guess I like this kit to give up on it just yet.
It looks like there's still a bit of work left to be done on the driver side fender vent but it should see some paint soon as well.

I got some time for a quick update and I guess I went a bit crazy with the camera since I felt I didn't use it enough at all :icon16: Excuse the pictures if they take awhile.
Since the compressor is really really dead, I can't do any painting so I decided to do something about the wheels.
Here's what I started out with... a set of Watanabe's by Fujimi. Pretty cool rims but I don't think they'll fit in well with the car though...
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/wheel_watanabe.jpg
I also have a set of these so... how would these Fujimi RP-F1's look with the larger offsets? They're small but then again, I think the smaller wheels would go well with this car. So lets see how well they go together...
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/wheel_rpf1.jpg
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/wheel_trim_front.jpg
The first thing I did was take out the centers from the Watanabes. Not too hard but cleaning them out well might be a bit tedious. The end result of that is shown below.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/wheel_ring.jpg
Next we start on the RP-F1's. All I'm really interested in is the face. Thus I trimmed the back of the wheel. It doesn't really matter how jagged the trim is right now as all that is going to be sanded off. I used a rotary tool to sand down to the desired diameter.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/wheel_trim_back.jpg
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/wheel_dremel.jpg
With about 10-15 minutes of sanding (I took my time checking quite often to make sure I don't have alot of slop inside the wheel and to ensure a good fit) we have this.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/wheel_pieces.jpg
With a bit of thin cement from behind, the new wheels are finished. Even the colors combination is growing on me now :p I might just go with a silver polished face and a light gunmetal trim.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/wheel_back.jpg
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/wheel_front.jpg
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/wheel_comparison02.jpg
And a final comparison on the car...
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/original_wheels.jpg

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/miata%20and%20rx7/new_wheels_01.jpg
Only two more to go and I'll call it a day.

Next we start on the RP-F1's. All I'm really interested in is the face. Thus I trimmed the back of the wheel. It doesn't really matter how jagged the trim is right now as all that is going to be sanded off. I used a rotary tool to sand down to the desired diameter.

With about 10-15 minutes of sanding (I took my time checking quite often to make sure I don't have alot of slop inside the wheel and to ensure a good fit) we have this.

With a bit of thin cement from behind, the new wheels are finished. Even the colors combination is growing on me now :p I might just go with a silver polished face and a light gunmetal trim.

And a final comparison on the car...

Only two more to go and I'll call it a day.

:eek2: Those deep dish RPF1's look sooooo sweet. Some stretchwall tires would look sweet on that too;)
