Cold air intake differences?

I'm about to buy a cold air intake I saw on eBay for $30. Saw another one for $120 that says "don't buy the cheap one - filters are cheap paper". Is there any difference other than the filters? I'm sure I can get a better filter for less than the $90 difference in the kits. Or am I missing something?

Filter or intake???

I'm referring to the aftermarket replacement for the factory airbox. Replaces the factory plumbing and box with a simple tube with an open filter on the end. Sorry for being non-specific.

Far as I can tell it's the same as any other - chrome pipe, air filter, clamps and boots to hook it all together.

I've heard of folks "building" these things out of just about everything - I just wanted to check and see if there was something specific to look out for in these kits lest I step in a hole somebody already stepped in. Knowhatamean?

u could BUILD ur own... :naughty: injen has a selection of insulated and uninsulated tubing to build ur own, throw on an extra layer of insulation (ya know, one of the strap on insulating kits) and u would have an awesome intake. it might not look like an HKS, but it would work just as good, if not better!

i would just go with the aem from what i hear that is the est way to go and worht all the money. it has a tuned velocity curve (it gets really loud) so your motor will deffinately have a mean growl with it. i dont know if the ones on ebay are like that. thats just my suggestion on it.

if u wanted 2 play it safe, u could always buy a full HKS system...

I'm not sure, but I have a AEM cold intake for sale if you are interested. It's brand new and just sitting in my garage.

I bought a cold air intake system on ebay for my 97 SL2 for around $120. It had a short ram pipe, a cold air pipe, clamps and stuff for both as well as a k&n open cone filter and decals. It didn't have instructions and I installed the Short Ram Pipe in by myself; the cold air pipe is sitting in my room. The pipe is close to the same size as the stock intake pipe, just a little bigger in diameter. It has a pretty good growl, although im sure you will get a bigger growl from the more popular brands (Intake manufacturer is CP Products).

K&N filters have nothing over a napa gold air filter except cost and a tiny difference in air flow (they also don't filter as well), you're better off building your own cold intake system (cheaper!)
