1993 Sable -- Windshield wiper problem - wipers stopping in wrong place

I have a mercury Sable 1993 that recently has the windshield wipers stopping in the wrong place. They should stop with the wipers in the down position, and they are stopping exactly opposite from this or in the farthest up position.

I can not think of where to even start on this. Has anyone ever heard of this problem before?

If so, or even any ideas would be helpful.

My 86 Thunderbird has the same problem. I went so far as to take the wiper transmission apart to find there is a plastic gear inside, that after time the teeth wear out ( stupid design). The gear is unavailable from the dealer, so there are only 2 ways of dealing with this problem. First is to go to the junk yard and get another one. Second if you play with the wiper switch (on- off) I can get the wipers to stop in the down position. It seems to be a common problem.

Happens on my '95 only when its raining. must be a short. try this: switch the wiper setting for delay wipe, and when the wiper is not moving, then shut it off. works for me!
