Check engine light

On my 2001 Windstar the check engine light has come on for the second time in the past week. It is steady on again, I suspect the fuel cap for some reason. Can I get the code by pushing some buttons in the correct order ie cruise control on or off and get the code or do I have to go to the garage and have them hookup to a computer?

Your 2001 has a "check gas cap" light, so it's not that. You need an OBDII compliant code reader to retrieve the code for you. Autozone will read it for free for you, or you can get a cheap code reader at harbor freight tools for around $30-40.
