Check engine light

On my 2001 Windstar the check engine light has come on for the second time in the past week. It is steady on again, I suspect the fuel cap for some reason. Can I get the code by pushing some buttons in the correct order ie cruise control on or off and get the code or do I have to go to the garage and have them hookup to a computer?
