Rock and roll may be American music, but rock music is not. Rock basically grew up in England, what with the Beatles, Clapton, Rolling Stones, Hendrix, the Yardbirds, not mention all of the British invasion bands coming out of England in the early to mid 60's.

Who do you think those bands were influenced by? Rock is American. Lots of the most popular bands were British, but their influences are all American. You only have to listen to the way they sing.
For instance, the Beatles are a mixture of the Everly Brothers, Elvis, Chuck Berry, with parts of the Motown sound thrown in. They made an attractive (white) package for teens of the era.

And Hendrix is American.

It appears that you like a certain British sound but you don't know where it came from and what else was around at the time.

Anyway, some of my favourites from within the narrow confines of rock music:

The Doors
The Byrds
Allman Brothers Band
Grateful Dead
The Stooges

My thoughts, in no particular order:

Nirvana
Coldplay
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Incubus
Smash Mouth

Not all rock. Some honorable mentions: NWA, Kaotic Minds Corrupt, Saliva, Static-x, Dave Matthews band, Wallflowers, Fastball......

That's all I can think of.

As far as Hendrix goes, I am quite aware of the fact that he was born and grew up in Seattle. But where do you thing he met Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, and where do you think they recorded their first album, and where did they become popular first? England.

I don't deny that many of the rock pioneers were influenced by American artists. But I can't fully agree with the statement that rock is distinctly American. A lot of the British blues artists had a big impact on early British rockers, like Clapton, for example. In any case, I would say that rock is mostly American.
