Trailer Hitch Scrapes Street

The trailer hitch (for the 2004 Sienna installed at Toyota dealership) scrapes almost every time we pull in or out of a parking lot (with a medium to small dip), or go over speedbumps etc. It happens intermitently when the only person in the van is the driver, and happens all the time if we have passengers. We cringe at the thought of trying to pull pull a loaded trailer, with the van loaded. It seems to me that the hitch we have should not have been offered as an accessory for this vehicle. We're waiting to see how our dealership plans to rectify this problem.
Does anyone else has a similar problem?

You might try the Toyota Sienna forum since this is a Ford Windstar forum. But with any of the minivans the clearance under the vehicle is very minimal. Add a trailer hitch and even slight load and you will be dragging. I doubt there is much the dealership can tell you other than to keep your towing to level roads.

One option you might check into is air bags, I've got them installed in my Nissan Pathfinder for towing. When you add passengers and slight tongue load to the rear of your van, you will tail drag. Air Bags install within your rear coil springs and allow you to increase their PSI when you are towing. End result is you can keep you rear end level and you can even raise it when you are fully loaded and towing. AirLift makes these and you can get versions that let you hook up an air compressor manually to inflate them, or versions that come with a compressor that installs on the vehicle and automatically keeps them at a set PSI.
